Sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
highlighted a group of six players from the Cerritos
College women's basketball team to be named to the
All-South Coast Conference South Division team.
Taylor became the 10th player in school history to
be named the conference's Player of the Year, while
it marked the second year a Cerritos player earned
the award. Last year, Genesis Lewis
and Maltresa Neely shared the
award. Head coach
Karen
Welliver, who earlier in the season
became the state's all-time leader in victories, was
named the Coach of the Year for the sixth time in
her career. She led the Falcons to a 20-12 season
record, while their 9-1 divisional record helped
them win the South Division for second year in a
row. It was also the 10th time a Welliver-coached
team won the conference championship in her 27
years.
Taylor, who was a
1st Team selection as a freshman, averaged 11.9
points, 9.1 rebounds and two assists a game during
the eight-game South Division schedule, while she
averages 13.2 points and 8.1 rebounds on the year.
As for Daughtery, she led the team with a 12.5
divisional scoring average, while she pulled down
4.8 rebounds and was second with a 2.9 assist
average. She also led the team with an .827 free
throw percentage. Daughtery also leads the team in
scoring for the season at 14.1 points a game. Butler
was a 2nd Team pick her freshman year and followed
that up by averaging 7.9 points and 7.0 rebounds a
game. She accounts for 6.9 points and 7.3 boards
during the season and leads the team with 72 steals.
After playing for
the Falcons during the 2006-07 season, Garcia took a
year off, but returned to average 5.6 points and led
the team with a 3.4 assist and 3.3 rebounds average
in divisional play. She also scores 4.4 points a
game during the season, while she posts comparable
numbers in rebounds (3.0) and assists (2.9). Jackson
came back from an injury and was a great addition
after getting back into playing condition. She hit
44% of her three-pointers to help her average 6.4
points a game, while she also averaged 3.9 rebounds
a game. On the year, Jackson accounts for 9.4 points
and 4.1 rebounds a game. Also coming off the bench
to add a boost to the lineup was Faagata, who
averaged 9.3 points and 6.6 rebounds in divisional
play, while she averages 9.3 points and 6.1 rebounds
on the season.
