The Cerritos
College women's basketball team was seeded #16
out of 18 teams for the Southern California
Regional Playoffs and will host a first round
game at 7:00 p.m. against Santa Barbara City
College, who was seeded #17. If the Falcons
(20-12) win the game, they will travel to face
top-seeded and three-time defending state
champion Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday
evening.
Champions of
the South Coast Conference South Division,
Cerritos will be getting their second look at
the Vaqueros (22-12), who finished third in the
Western State Conference North Division. Back on
December 7 at the College of the Sequoias
Tournament, SBCC handed the Falcons a 72-58
defeat. At the time, Cerritos was without
freshman guard
Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS), who
has added an offensive spark off the bench since
her return from an injury.
In that game,
the Vaqueros received 24 points, nine rebound
and five assists from 5-11 guard Katie Russell,
while the Falcons shot only 37% from the field
and were out-rebounded, 53-34. Santa Barbara
pulled away for the win after a close 37-33
first half. By contrast, SBCC used 15 players in
the game, while Cerritos had only eight. For
Cerritos, sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
led the team with 18 points, while freshman
guard
Maleta Daughtery (Redondo HS)
added 13 points.
