When the
three-point line was moved back to the international
distance, people thought it might prevent teams from
attempting as many shots from beyond the arch. In a
South Coast Conference cross-over game on Friday
night at Cerritos College, Pasadena City College's
Melia Basavand showed that the new distance wasn't
going to slow her down, as she drained five from
well beyond the three-point distance. Her 20 points
and six assists helped the Lancers (20-2) to a 76-68
win over the Falcons, extending their winning streak
to 13 games. As for Cerritos, they had won six of
their last seven games, but dropped to 12-9 on the
season after the loss. The Falcons will now host
three-time defending state champion Mt. San Antonio
College at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday in another
cross-over game.
Cerritos jumped
out to a quick 6-0 lead on three-pointers by
sophomore
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS) and
freshman
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS). But
the Lancers, who didn't score their first basket
until 6:15 had expired from the clock, quickly
worked themselves back into the game and took their
first lead at 18-16 on a back-door layup by Easter
Faafiti with 7:45 left in the first half. Pasadena
City would go on to lead the rest of the way, but
did have to withstand a strong comeback by the
Falcons in the second half.
Daughtery get
Cerritos to within 49-45 after a three-pointer with
15:19 remaining in the second half, but the
inside-outside combination of Basavand (20 points)
and Faafiti (22 points, 13 rebounds) was too much
for the Falcons. The starting five for Pasadena City
accounted for 71 of the team's points. As for
Cerritos, sophomore
Mercedes
Taylor (Gahr HS) led the team
with 21 points and also added six rebounds, while
Daughtery finished with 15 points and seven
rebounds. Coming off the bench, freshman
Vannesa
Faagata (Paramount HS)
contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Butler
finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and four
assists.
