In the first half
of their South Coast Conference crossover game on
Wednesday night, the Cerritos College women's
basketball team held Mt. San Antonio College to just
22 points on 11-of-26 shooting and took a two-point
lead into the locker rom. The second half was
completely different, as the Mounties (20-2) scored
51 points and pulled away for a 73-63 win, which
dropped the Falcons to 12-10 on the season. The team
will open defense of their South Division title on
Friday when they travel to Los Angeles Southwest
College for a 5:30 p.m. game.
Aggressive defense
and strong rebounding enabled Cerritos to lead by as
much as seven points (29-22) in the first half. But
the three-time defending state champions had too
much firepower, and coupled that will successful
free throw shooting. In fact, the final nine Mountie
points came from the free throw line, as they
finished the game 23-of-33, while the Falcons were a
scant 2-of-10 from the charity stripe.
Cerritos saw their
lead slip away in the second half, but did hold a
final 46-45 lead with 8:37 remaining after freshman
guard
Raven Tripp
(John Glenn HS) hit a three-pointer. But
the Mounties followed that by outscoring the
Falcons, 7-1 and were able to pull away from the
free throw line. An offensive rebound and put-back
by freshman forward
Vannesa
Faagata (Paramount HS) tied
the game at 55 with 5:19 remaining, but once again,
the Mounties took advantage of consecutive Falcon
turnovers to score baskets.
Freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) led all
scorers with 21 points, which included five
three-pointers, while Faagata added 14 points, 11
rebounds and three blocked shots. Sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS), one
of the team's leading scorers, was held without a
point, although she did contribute nine rebounds.
Alexsis Brown led the Mounties with 20 points and 10
rebounds, while Brittney Lewis (19 points, eight
rebounds) and Eliza Dy (13 points) also scored in
double-figures.
