It took a little
longer than she wanted, but Cerritos College women's
basketball coach
Karen
Welliver was as relieved as she was
happy after her team's 54-51 South Coast Conference
South Division overtime win at home on Wednesday
night. Not only did the win even the team's record a
1-1 in divisional play, it also propelled the
veteran coach into first place among all California
Community College women's basketball coaches in
career wins. Now in her 27th year, Welliver won her
564th win, which propelled her past Tom Martinez,
who won 563 games at San Mateo College.
The Falcons (13-11
overall) had a chance to win the game in regulation,
but freshman guard
Raven Tripp
(John Glenn HS) missed two free throws with
the game tied at 45 with 6.5 seconds remaining. But
the Warriors (6-15, 1-1) were unable to score before
the end of regulation, sending the game to an extra
five minutes of play.
A basket and pair
of free throws by freshman guard
Cherish
Sanchez (Norwalk HS) to start
the extra period gave the Falcons a 49-45 lead, and
the team held on with a pair of free throws from
sophomore guard
Rachel
Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)
with 19.9 seconds left, while sophomore guard
Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS)
netted one of two with 9.5 seconds remaining to seal
the victory. In the overtime period, Cerritos made
only 5-of-11 from the free throw line.
In regulation
Cerritos led by as much as nine (23-14) heading into
halftime, but the Warriors went on a 20-7 run,
thanks to 13 points from Ryann Louie to take a 34-30
lead with 9:16 remaining. But a three-pointer from
Butler got the team to within one point before
freshman guard
Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS) drained a
three-pointer to give Cerritos a 36-34 lead.
El Camino took
their final lead at 41-40 after a three-pointer from
Carla Shaw with 1:57 left, but Tripp responded with
a bucket, while sophomore forward
Mercedes
Taylor (Gahr HS) put the team
up 45-41 with 1:05 remaining in regulation. The
Warriors then scored the final four points to send
the game to overtime.
No Falcon scored
in double-figures, but Taylor (nine points, 10
rebounds) led the way, while Tripp added nine points
and eight rebounds off the bench. The trio of
Butler, Sanchez and Jackson each scored eight points
for Cerritos. Louie led all scorers with 24 points,
while Javana Kizer pulled down 11 rebounds for the
Warriors.
