This Week's Sports Schedule

01.21.09 - KAREN WELLIVER NOW WINNINGEST COACH IN HISTORY

Photo of Karen Welliver    With their 54-51 South Coast Conference overtime home win over El Camino College on Wednesday night, Cerritos College women's basketball coach Karen Welliver has now placed her name atop the list of most career wins in California Community College Women's Basketball history. Now in her 27th season, Welliver now has 564 career wins, pushing her past Tom Martinez, who posted 563 wins at San Mateo College. The team is now 13-11 overall this season and 1-1 in South Divisional play.

Only the second women's basketball coach at Cerritos, Welliver (564-285) has led the Falcons to nine South Coast Conference championships and six appearances in the state championship tournament. Ironically enough, Welliver won her 500th game in 2005 against San Mateo, who is now coached by Michelle Warner, who played for the Falcons from 1986-88.
