Facing a team that
has one just one game is not expected to cause a
team troubles. But, when the two teams are rivals,
the records are thrown out the window. Trailing by
five points at halftime (23-18), the Cerritos
College women's basketball team finally pulled ahead
and registered a 60-47 South Coast Conference South
Division win over Long Beach City College on Friday
night at Cerritos. With the win, the Falcons are now
14-11 overall and 2-1 in divisional play, while the
Vikings fell to 1-20 and 0-3. The team will now
travel to Compton College on Wednesday for a 5:30
p.m. divisional game.
The Vikings took a
10-9 lead in the first half on a basket by Alanna
Yim with 10:45 left and then slowly built as big a
lead as seven points (23-16) before sophomore
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS)
ended the first half with a basket.
Cerritos opened
the second half by scoring the first seven points to
take a two-point lead (25-23), with the big blow
being a three-pointer by freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) with
18:05 left in the second half. Slowly the Falcons
pulled away and had the lead in double-digits after
a three-pointer by freshman guard
Raven Tripp
(John Glenn HS) gave the team a 41-29
advantage. The biggest lead of the game was 21
points (50-29) with 7:34 remaining.
Daughtery led all
scorers with 18 points (7-of-11 shooting), to go
along with five rebounds and four steals, while
Taylor finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Freshman guard
Cherish
Sanchez (Norwalk HS) came off
the bench to account for eight points, while
sophomore guard
Cecily
Garcia (St. Joseph HS) dished
out seven assists. Long Beach City did out-rebound
the Falcons, 40-31, thanks in part to 14 rebounds
from Felicia Cade, who also scored seven points. Yim
pulled down 10 rebounds, while Karyse Payne led the
offense with 10 points.
