At times this
season, the Cerritos College women's basketball team
has played sluggishly in the first half only to turn
things around in the second half and win the game.
That was never more evident than the team's
performance against ECC Compton Center on Wednesday
night. The Falcons trailed 23-14 with 6:53 left in
the first half before a late rally get them to a
26-26 tie at intermission. But the second half was a
different story, as Cerritos (15-11 overall, 3-1
South Division) pulled away, thanks to tight defense
and recorded a 62-53 South Coast Conference South
Division win. The team will host East Los Angeles
College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a conference
crossover game.
Sophomore guard
Cecily Garcia (St. Joseph HS)
helped soften the Lady Tartar (9-15, 2-1) defense
with a three-pointer before sophomore forward
Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) gave
the Falcons a 45-35 lead after her three-pointer
with 11:17 left in the game. A pair of offensive
rebound put-backs by freshman forward
Vannesa
Faagata (Paramount HS),
coupled with a driving basket by freshman guard
Cherish Sanchez (Norwalk HS)
enabled the Falcons to lead by as many as 18 points
before ECC Compton Center made a late run and got to
within seven points, 60-53.
Four Falcons
scored in double-figures, led by Taylor who also
contributed nine rebounds, four steals and three
assists, while Faagata wound up with 12 points and a
team-high 13 rebounds. The duo of Sanchez and
freshman guard
Maleta
Daughtery (Redondo HS) each
added 10 points and combined for six rebounds, while
Daughtery also posted four assists. Garcia finished
with six points, four rebounds and three assists,
while Alexis Robertson led the Lady Tartars with 16
points.
