The Cerritos
College women's basketball team came out in the
second half of their South Coast Conference
crossover game at home against East Los Angeles
College on Friday night lighting up the scoreboard.
Leading 34-21 at intermission, the Falcons (16-11)
drained three straight three-pointers, which helped
them cruise to an 86-50 win over the Huskies
(11-15). Cerritos will now travel to Los Angeles
City College on Wednesday for another 5:30 crossover
game.
The trio of
sophomores Rachel Butler (Calvary
Chapel HS) and Mercedes Taylor
(Gahr HS), along with freshman
Maleta Daughtery (Redondo HS) each
netted a trey, as the Falcons had their lead up to
20 points (43-23) with only 2:08 expired off the
clock. The lead continued to swell and it was as
high as 31 points before settling on the 28-point
victory.
Although the three
players accounted for 58 of the team's points, it
certainly was a team effort in registering the
team's fourth win in a row. Making her fifth start
of the season, freshman guard Cherish
Sanchez (Norwalk HS)
posted four points and five assists, while freshman
forward Vannesa Faagata (Paramount
HS) scored seven points and added seven
rebounds off the bench.
However, it was
Taylor's 23 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and
three steals that paced the team, while Daughtery
(19 points, 5-of-7 3-pointers, three steals) and
Butler (16 points, five rebounds, five steals) who
controlled most of the tempo of the game. Freshman
Adria Jackson (Paramount HS)
played her best game of the season, as she pulled
down nine rebounds to go along with her six points
and three assists, while freshman guard
Raven Tripp (John Glenn HS)
finished with five points, four rebounds, three
assists.
East Los Angeles
cleared out for guard Megan Iloff, who led all
scorers with 29 points, while she also added five
rebounds, five steals and four assists.
