02.27.10 - Season ends with playoff loss
For the last several weeks of the regular season, the Cerritos College women's basketball has been forced to play with seven players due to injuries. They were able to play well enough to secure a share of the South Coast Conference South Division title and berth in the Southern California Regional Playoffs as the #12-seeded team. After a first round bye, the Falcons (18-12) faced #5-seeded Riverside College (22-8) on Saturday and the end result was an 89-66 that ended the team's season...[more]

02.23.10 - Adria Jackson named conference Co-MVP
Adria Jackson named conference Co-MVPFor the second year in a row, a member of the Cerritos College women's basketball team has been honored by being named the Co-Most Valuable Player of the South Coast Conference South Division. Last season, sophomore Mercedes Lewis was named the Co-MVP, while this season, sophomore guard Adria Jackson (Lynwood HS) has received the honor. Jackson and the rest of her team will be opening the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Riverside College.

Last year, Jackson missed most of the season with an injury, but was healthy enough to play in 27 of the team's 29 games thus far. She was second on the team in scoring (13.8) and rebounding (8.4) during the abbreviated divisional season, and has averages a team-leading 15.2 points a game throughout the season. A solid all-around player, Jackson is second on the team in season rebounding (6.6), while she also leads the squad with 48 steals and averages two assists a game...[more]

02.22.10 - Basketball playoff pairings announced
Both the Cerritos College men's and women's basketball teams won the South Coast Conference South Division this season and were each rewarded with bids in the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Falcon men's team was seeded #12 out of the 20 teams and will receive a bye in the first round. They will travel to Mt. San Antonio College, champions of the South Coast Conference North Division and #5-seeded team on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. game. Cerritos (18-10) did not face the Mounties (24-4) this season, while the winner will play on March 6 at a site to be determined by the first two rounds...[more]

02.17.10 - Team locks down share of title with victory

Team locks down share of title with victory.Needing a victory to ensure at least a share of the South Coast Conference South Division championship, the Cerritos College women's basketball team secured that with a 70-53 win over Long Beach City College at The Aviary on Wednesday. The title marks the second season in a row the Falcons won the championship and will wait until Monday to find out where they are seeded in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The team is a half game ahead of Los Angeles Southwest College, who closes out their regular season on Friday against El Camino College.

Cerritos (18-11, 5-1) opened up an early lead and never looked back against the Vikings (3-21, 0-6), It was a 23-9 advantage with 9:11 left in the first half after freshman guard Jazlyn Afusia (St. Paul HS) hit her second straight three-pointer in a row and third in the half. The Falcons took a 39-26 lead into intermission and then pushed their lead as high as 23 points (51-28) with 15:36 left in the second half after an offensive rebound and basket by sophomore guard Adria Jackson (Lynwood HS)...[more]

Freshman forward Rose Boatner came within two rebounds of tying a school record Freshman forward Rose Boatner (Centennial HS) came within two rebounds of tying a school record, as the Cerritos College women's basketball team clinched at least a share of the South Coast Conference South Division championship with their 56-45 win over El Camino College at The Aviary on Friday night. The Falcons (17-11, 4-1) close out the regular season next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. when they host Long Beach City College.

As for Boatner, she hauled down a career-high 25 rebounds, which is tied for the second most in a game in school history and came within two boards of sharing the record of 27 caroms, set by Ebony Charles against Pasadena City College in 1996. In fact, the 25 rebounds ties Charles, who had 25 in the same season against Compton College...[more]

02.10.10 - Falcons back in conference title hunt
With a chance to get back in position to earn at least a share of the South Coast Conference South Division championship, the Cerritos College women's basketball team came up with a huge road win at Los Angeles Southwest College on Wednesday night. Trailing for most of the night, the Falcons (16-11, 3-1) pulled ahead and didn't relinquish the lead in a 67-62 win over the Cougars (13-10, 4-1). 02.03.10 - Late comeback falls short
The Cerritos College women's basketball team found themselves trailing by as many as 22 points to Pasadena City College in a South Coast Conference crossover game on Wednesday night. The team rallied to get to within 76-70 with 1:30 remaining in the second half, but that's as close as the Falcons would get, as they dropped an 83-72 decision. Cerritos (15-11) will now resume South Division play next Wednesday when they travel to Los Angeles Southwest College for a 5:30 p.m. contest...[more]

01.27.10 - Cerritos routs Long Beach City, 74-40
Even with a depleted roster due to injuries, the Cerritos College women's basketball team had no trouble dispatching rival Long Beach City College, 74-40 in a South Coast Conference South Division game on Wednesday night at Long Beach. The Falcons (15-10, 2-1) opened up a 27-1 lead to start the game and took a 41-11 lead into intermission. The team will now travel to Pasadena City College for a 5:30 cross-over game on Wednesday...[more]

Thanks to the hot shooting of freshman Naomi Perkins (Artesia HS) and their overall team speed, the Cerritos College women's basketball rebounded from their tough loss on Wednesday night and came away with a 72-39 South Coast Conference South Division win at El Camino College on Friday night. 01.20.10 - Missed chances lead to tough loss

Missed chances lead to tough loss for the Falcons.In a game that saw both teams taking shots at establishing themselves as the dominant team, it was the Los Angeles Southwest College women's basketball team that landed the final blow, as they posted an 83-78 South Coast Conference South Division win over Cerritos College at The Aviary on Wednesday night. The Falcons (13-10, 0-1) will now travel to El Camino College for a 5:30 p.m. divisional game on Friday.

    Trailing the majority of the game, the Falcons took a slim 41-40 halftime lead and was able to open up a five-point (45-40) advantage with 18:34 left in the second half after a basket by freshman forward Rose Boatner (Centennial HS). But the Cougars (11-9, 2-0) finally fought back and took a 66-60 lead with 8:27 remaining. Cerritos did make another comeback and led, 71-68 after a Boatner put-back with 6:10 left. But that would be the last time Cerritos would lead, as LA Southwest took advantage of consecutive Falcon turnovers and rode the hot shooting of Keyanna Johnson, who scored 14 of her 19 points in the second half...[more]

The Cerritos College women's basketball team used their overall team speed and shooting touch to open a sizable lead at East Los Angeles College on Friday night and rode that to a 78-45 South Coast Conference crossover win. The victory improved the team's record to 13-9, as they begin South Divisional play on Wednesday night. 01.08.10 - Falcons pull away after slow first half

After a slow start to their South Coast Conference crossover game on Friday night, the Cerritos College women's basketball team picked up the pace of the game and pulled away from ECC Compton Center (3-9) at The Aviary. The Falcons (12-9) opened the game by shooting 1-for-16 from the field and trailed 11-1 before they pulled it together and came away with a 58-41 victory. The team will now travel to East Los Angeles College for a 5:30 p.m. crossover game next Friday.

After needing 5:59 to score their first basket of the game, Cerritos took their first lead of the game with 5:46 left in the first half when freshman guard Naomi Perkins (Artesia HS) scored to put the game at 18-17. Sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery (Redondo Union HS) followed by draining a three-pointer for a four-point cushion, while the team took a 23-15 lead into intermission...[more]

Looking for their second win of the season over Mt. San Antonio College, the Cerritos College women's basketball team ran out of steam in the second half and suffered a 65-46 South Coast Conference crossover road game on Wednesday night. The Falcons (11-9) will now return for their first home game in a month when they host ECC Compton Center and 5:30 p.m. on Friday in another crossover game...[more]

12.20.09 - Late three-pointer gives Falcons win
With 13 lead changes throughout the game, the Cerritos College women's basketball team took the final lead of the game with 40 seconds left when freshman guard Jazlyn Afusia (St. Paul HS) drained a three-pointer to give the Falcons a 53-50 lead over Orange Coast College in the third place game of the Orange Coast Tournament. A pair of free throws by sophomore guard Maleta  Daughtery  (Redondo Union HS) helped seal the game, as Cerritos (9-7) posted a 55-53 win. The Falcons will now enter the Fullerton Tournament starting next Sunday and play at 4:00 p.m. against Palomar College...[more]

12.19.09 - Early lead slips away in loss to Saddleback
In the first half of their Orange Coast Tournament semi-final game against Saddleback College, the Cerritos College women's basketball team did everything necessary to open up a 42-29 lead. But it was the complete opposite in the second half, as the Gauchos (9-5) outscored the Falcons (8-7), 51-31 and came away with an 80-73 win. 12.18.09 - Falcons open tournament with big win
The Cerritos College women's basketball team sprinted out to a 35-19 halftime lead over Southwestern College in the first round of the Orange Coast Tournament on Friday and turned it into a convincing 72-49 win. The Falcons (8-6), the defending tournament champions, will now advance to the championship semi-finals on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., where they will face Saddleback College...[more]

12.11.09 - Cerritos comes up short in loss to Riverside

Cerritos comes up short in loss to RiversideLed by sophomore guard Adria Jackson's (Lynwood HS) 27 points, the Cerritos College women's basketball team thought they had done enough to post a win over visiting Riverside College on Friday night. But the Falcons were victimized by 24 turnovers and wound up being defeated, 71-65. Cerritos (7-6) will now compete in the Orange Coast Tournament and open on Friday at 1:00 p.m. against Southwestern College.

Leading 35-28 at intermission, Cerritos had no answer for the duo of Gloria Thomas and Crystal Vazquez, who combined to score 23 second half points. More importantly, the Tigers (8-4) were successful at the free throw line late in the game, making 7-of-8 down the stretch to hold off the Falcons...[more]

12.07.09 - Falcons reach championships of tournament
The Cerritos College women's basketball team showed that they were able to overcome adversity against one of the best teams in the state over the weekend, as they advanced to the championships of the College of the Sequoias Tournament. The Falcons, who opened with a 75-45 win over Foothill College, followed that with a 75-71 win over powerful Mt. San Antonio College, while  63-57 win over Antelope Valley College sent the team to the championship game. A slow start proved to be damaging against Ventura College, and Cerritos (7-5) suffered a 77-64 defeat. The team will now host Riverside College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in a non-conference game...[more]

11.25.09 - Last-second shot beats Cypress, 79-78

Sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery scored with :04 seconds left to beat Cypress 79-78.Sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery (Redondo Union HS) drove toward the basket with time running out and her team down by a point. Upon reaching the free throw line, she stopped to look for someone to pass the ball to. Not finding anyone, she calmly drained a jumper with :04 seconds left in the second half to give the Cerritos College women's basketball team a 79-78 non-conference win at The Aviary on Wednesday night against Cypress College. The Chargers (5-3) had one last chance to score, but their desperation pass was intercepted by freshman guard Montanique Washington (Long Beach Jordan HS) and the Falcons (4-4) survived with the win.
   
Leading by as many as nine points (46-37) in the second half, Cerritos was victimized by 23 second-half points from Cypress forward Quortlyn O'Neal, who scored 17 of the Chargers final 19 points in the game. In fact, it was O'Neal who tied the game twice in the final minute with a free throw, while her second visit gave Cypress a 78-77 lead with 16 seconds left, setting up the final shot by Daughtery...[more]

11.21.09 - Team wins pair of road games
The Cerritos College women's basketball team played a pair of road games in back-to-back fashion and came away winners, as they defeated Los Angeles Pierce College (83-69) and followed that with a 71-50 victory over Oxnard College. The two wins improves the team's record to 3-4, as the team returns home to face Cypress College in a non-conference game at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday...[more]

11.18.09 - Falcons lose to Orange Coast in overtime

Falcons dropped a 76-74 loss to Orange Coast in overtime.Faced with a chance to send the game into a second overtime, freshman guard April Perry (Cabrillo HS) saw her shot fall off the mark, and the Cerritos College women's basketball team suffered a 76-74 non-conference loss to Orange Coast College on Wednesday at The Aviary. The loss dropped the Falcons to 1-4 on the season, while the Pirates improved to 2-2. Cerritos will now travel to Los Angeles Pierce College on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. South Coast Conference crossover game.

After Orange Coast tied the game at 66 with 54 seconds left in the second half, neither team scored, which sent the game to overtime. The Pirates scored the first six points in the extra period, thanks in part to a three-pointer from Michelle Yamasaki. But the Falcons worked their way back into the game and cut the deficit to 76-74 with six seconds left after a driving layup from sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery (Redondo Union HS)...[more]



11.15.09 - Cerritos takes one of three at Sierra Tournament
After opening the Sierra Tournament with a 61-55 win over Contra Costa College, the Cerritos College women's basketball team dropped their next two games. They were defeated 71-49 by City College of San Francisco and followed that with a 67-62 setback against the host Wolverines. The Falcons (1-3) will now host Orange Coast College in their home opener at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday...[more]

11.06.09 - Falcons open season with loss to Irvine Valley

Cerritos College open season with a loss to Irvine ValleyThe Cerritos College women's basketball team opened their 2009-10 season on the road at Irvine Valley College on Friday night and came out on the short end of a 60-40 decision. The Falcons (0-1) struggled from the field, as they netted just 1-of-22 shots from three-point range and committed 28 turnovers. The team will look to turn things around when they travel to the Sierra Tournament this weekend, with their first game slated for Friday.

Down just 28-18 at intermission, the Falcons tried to get back into the game with outside shooting, but the shots weren't going down. Freshman April Perry (Cabrillo HS), who missed all six of her treys, led the team with 10 points and added four rebounds before fouling out. Sophomore Adria Jackson (Lynwood HS) accounted for eight points and four steals, while sophomore Maleta Daughtery (Redondo Union HS) finished with seven points and three steals....[more]

07.29.09 - Pair of players announce plans
Cerritos College women's basketball players Mercedes Taylor (Gahr HS) and Rachel Butler (Calvary Chapel HS)have both announced their plans for the future after completing their Falcon careers. Taylor, who was named the South Coast Conference South Division Player of the Year and was a 3rd Team All-State selection, will be continuing her education and playing career at Cal Poly Pomona. As for Butler, who was 1st Team all-conference selection and a member of two state championship track and field teams, will compete in both sports at William Penn University in Iowa...[more]
