The Cerritos
College women's basketball team showed that they
were able to overcome adversity against one of the
best teams in the state over the weekend, as
they advanced to the championships of the College of
the Sequoias Tournament. The Falcons, who opened
with a 75-45 win over Foothill College, followed
that with a 75-71 win over powerful Mt. San Antonio
College, while 63-57 win over Antelope Valley
College sent the team to the championship game. A
slow start proved to be damaging against Ventura
College, and Cerritos (7-5) suffered a 77-64 defeat.
The team will now host Riverside College at 7:00
p.m. on Friday in a non-conference game.
In the win over
Mt. SAC, freshman guard
April Perry
(Cabrillo HS), one of the team's leading
scorers, went down with an injury. But the young
Falcons turned to a pair of sophomores to help them
pull off the upset. Guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) poured in 25 points,
while guard Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS) added 19
points and six rebounds. Despite struggling from the
field, the Falcons took advantage of 30 Mountie
turnovers to help them in the win. Freshman guard
Naomi Perkins (Artesia HS)
came off the bench to contribute 12 points and five
boards, while freshman
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
led the team with seven rebounds.
Without Perry for
the remainder of the tournament, Daughtery and
Jackson, who were both named to the all-tournament
team, provided the majority of the offense. However,
freshman guard Montanique
Washington (Long Beach Jordan HS),
who stepped into the startling lineup, did a great
job, as she scored nine points in the win over
Antelope Valley. As for Jackson (21 points, five
rebounds) and Daughtery (16 points, four assists,
four steals), they accounted for six of the team's
seven three-pointers, as the Falcons came back from
an eight-point halftime deficit.
Although they had
a tough time from the field against the Pirates in
the championship game, Jackson (17 points, seven
rebounds) Daughtery (14 points, three assists) and
Perkins (13 points, five rebounds) led the way.
Washington matched her nine points in her second
start, while freshman guard Johnina
Wright (Dominguez HS) dished
out a team-high four assists.
