The Cerritos
College women's basketball team sprinted out to a
35-19 halftime lead over Southwestern College in the
first round of the Orange Coast Tournament on Friday
and turned it into a convincing 72-49 win. The
Falcons (8-6), the defending tournament champions,
will now advance to the championship semi-finals on
Saturday at 5:00 p.m., where they will face
Saddleback College.
In the win, the
Falcons not only drained seven three-pointers, they
saw the Jaguars go 0-for-15 from three-point range
and shoot just 28% from the field. By contrast,
Cerritos converted 45% of their field goals and
out-rebounded Southwestern, 53-37.
Freshman forward
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
returned to the lineup and scored 11 points on
5-of-6 shooting and led the team with 13 rebounds.
After going scoreless in her last game, sophomore
guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) led all scorers with 18
points, which included four three-pointers, while
she also dished off four assists. Last year
Daughtery was named the tournament's Most Valuable
Player. As a team, the Falcons made 29 field goals
and were credited with 20 assists.

Adria Jackson (Lynwood HS)
added 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists,
while freshman guard
Jazlyn Afusia (St. Paul HS)
posted a team-high five assists to go with her
eight points and four rebounds, while the team
received 16 points and 17 rebounds off the bench.
