In the first half
of their Orange Coast Tournament semi-final game
against Saddleback College, the Cerritos College
women's basketball team did everything necessary to
open up a 42-29 lead. But it was the complete
opposite in the second half, as the Gauchos (9-5)
outscored the Falcons (8-7), 51-31 and came away
with an 80-73 win. Cerritos will now play the host
Pirates in the third place game at 3:00 p.m. on
Sunday.
Saddleback was
able to pull away and then hold their lead from the
free throw line, as they converted 22-of-35 from the
charity stripe, while Justine Chacon netted 12-of-13
and led the Gauchos with 26 points. Sophomore guard Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS) did her
best to keep the Falcons in the game, making 9-of-18
field goals, including four three-pointers to lead
the team with 27 points before fouling out. As a
team, Cerritos had two players foul out, while four
others finished the game with four fouls.
In addition to the
27 points and seven rebounds from Jackson, the
Falcons also received 14 points from both sophomore
guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) and freshman guard
April Perry (Cabrillo HS),
while Daughtery also led the team with four assists.
Freshman forward
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
was limited to just two points, but did pull down
nine boards, while freshman guard
Naomi
Perkins (Artesia HS) added six
rebounds off the bench.
