With 13 lead
changes throughout the game, the Cerritos College
women's basketball team took the final lead of the
game with 40 seconds left when freshman guard Jazlyn Afusia
(St. Paul HS) drained a three-pointer to
give the Falcons a 53-50 lead over Orange Coast
College in the third place game of the Orange Coast
Tournament. A pair of free throws by sophomore
guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) helped seal the game, as
Cerritos (9-7) posted a 55-53 win. The Falcons will
now enter the Fullerton Tournament starting next
Sunday and play at 4:00 p.m. against Palomar
College.
The game was close
from the outset, as the two teams were tied at 27 at
intermission. But timely shooting, which included a
trio of three-pointers from Afusia, who finished
with a game-high 15 points, helped the Falcons come
away with the win. In addition to her 15 points, Afusia
also hauled in seven rebounds, while All-Tournament
selection Adria Jackson
(Lynwood HS) led the way with 10 caroms to
go along with her 13 points and three assists. Daughtery
contributed 11 points, while All-Tournament choice
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
pulled down nine rebounds and chipped in with four
points.
The win over the
Pirates avenged a 76-74 overtime loss a month
earlier in a non-conference game. In the win,
Cerritos out-rebounded Orange Coast, 48-39, while
their 9-for-9 from the free throw line in the second
half allowed them to stay within striking distance.
