The Cerritos College women's basketball team
found themselves trailing by as many as 22
points to Pasadena City College in a South Coast
Conference crossover game on Wednesday night.
The team rallied to get to within 76-70 with
1:30 remaining in the second half, but that's as
close as the Falcons would get, as they dropped
an 83-72 decision. Cerritos (15-11) will now
resume South Division play next Wednesday when
they travel to Los Angeles Southwest College for
a 5:30 p.m. contest.
It was a layup by freshman guard
April
Perry (Cabrillo HS) that
got the team within six points late in the game.
However, the Lancers (20-3) held off the rally,
despite struggling at the free throw line. On
the night, Pasadena City was only 14-for-30, but
made up for it with rebounding, holding a
14-rebound edge, 55-41.
In the first half, Cerritos saw their deficit
get to 25-11, but made their first attempt to
get back into the game after sophomore guard Adria
Jackson (Lynwood HS)
netted a trey to cut the deficit to 31-28. Just
as they did in the second half, Pasadena City
built up another lead and led 46-38 at
intermission after Falcon freshman guard Jazlyn Afusia
(St. Paul HS) drained a three-pointer.
On the night, Perry led the Falcons with 21
points and also hauled in six rebounds, with Afusia
checking in with 13 points, six rebounds and
three assists. Despite a poor 4-for-23 shooting
night, Jackson wound up with 11 points and seven
caroms, with sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) posing 11 points.
Freshman forward
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
led the team with 10 rebounds and added nine
points. Kim Smith paced the Lancers with 23
points, as five players scored in
double-figures.
