With a chance to get back in position to earn at
least a share of the South Coast Conference
South Division championship, the Cerritos
College women's basketball team came up with a
huge road win at Los Angeles Southwest College
on Wednesday night. Trailing for most of the
night, the Falcons (16-11, 3-1) pulled ahead and
didn't relinquish the lead in a 67-62 win over
the Cougars (13-10, 4-1). Cerritos will now host
El Camino College at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, with
just one more game remaining.
Leading 64-62 late in the game, freshman guard Jazlyn Afusia
(St. Paul HS) was intentionally fouled
by Venesha Hallman, giving Afusia two free
throws and the Falcons the ball with 12 seconds
left. Afusia (six points, eight assists) netted
one of the two free throws, while on the inbound
pass, freshman forward
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
was left alone going to the basket and scored an
easy lay-up to secure the win.
In the first half, Cerritos struggled to hold
off the Cougars, who led 32-28 at intermission.
But the slowly worked their way back into the
game and took their first lead at 47-44 when
freshman
April
Perry (Cabrillo HS)
drained a three-pointer with 12:13 left in the
second half. The Falcons led by as many as seven
points (62-55), but the Cougars got back in the
game and were led by Keyanna Johnson's 20
points.
Perry led the team with 19 points and added six
rebounds, while Jackson finished with 16 points
and five board. As for Boatner, she paced the
team with 12 rebounds to accompany her eight
points, while sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) added 12 points.
