After opening the
Sierra Tournament with a 61-55 win over Contra Costa
College, the Cerritos College women's basketball
team dropped their next two games. They were
defeated 71-49 by City College of San Francisco and
followed that with a 67-62 setback against the host
Wolverines. The Falcons (1-3) will now host Orange
Coast College in their home opener at 4:30 p.m. on
Wednesday.
In the win over
Contra Costa, Cerritos received a team-high 12
points from freshman
April Perry
(Cabrillo HS), while freshman Jazlyn Afusia
(St. Paul HS) contributed 11 points. The
Falcons opened up a 29-14 halftime lead and held off
a late rally to record the win. Sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS) was limited to just nine
points, but added nine rebounds, with freshman
Michelle Webb (Santa Fe HS)
adding nine caroms. Freshman guard Montanique
Washington (St. Matthias HS)
chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.
A slow start
against the Rams cost the Falcons and they played
the entire game from behind. Lost in the setback was
a 15-point performance from Perry, while freshman
Rose Boatner (Centennial HS)
pulled down a season-high 14 rebounds. Both Daughtery
(seven rebounds) and freshman
Naomi
Perkins (Artesia HS) each
added 12 points, while Perkins chipped in with five
offensive rebounds.
Down 63-54 late in
the game against Sierra, the Falcons received a
three-pointer from Afusia (six points), but the
Wolverines converted eight straight free throws to
hold off Cerritos. Perkins (16 points, seven
rebounds) also netted a three-pointer in the final
seconds, but it was too late. Daughtery scored 11 of
her 13 points in the first half and added six
rebounds, while Perry finished with 11 points, seven
steals, six rebounds and five assists.
