Faced with a
chance to send the game into a second overtime,
freshman guard
April Perry
(Cabrillo HS) saw her shot fall off the
mark, and the Cerritos College women's basketball
team suffered a 76-74 non-conference loss to Orange
Coast College on Wednesday at The Aviary. The loss
dropped the Falcons to 1-4 on the season, while the
Pirates improved to 2-2. Cerritos will now travel to
Los Angeles Pierce College on Friday for a 7:30 p.m.
South Coast Conference crossover game.
After Orange Coast
tied the game at 66 with 54 seconds left in the
second half, neither team scored, which sent the
game to overtime. The Pirates scored the first six
points in the extra period, thanks in part to a
three-pointer from Michelle Yamasaki. But the
Falcons worked their way back into the game and cut
the deficit to 76-74 with six seconds left after a
driving layup from sophomore guard Maleta Daughtery
(Redondo Union HS).
On the inbound,
the ball was knocked out of bounds, which gave
Cerritos one more chance to extend the game.
However, Perry (21 points, six rebounds) missed her
last-second shot and the Falcons were defeated. The
downfall for the Falcons was their free throw
shooting, as they made just 16-of-29 on the night
and missed seven of them in the second half.
In the first half,
Orange Coast opened up a 10-point lead (22-12) with
9:32 remaining, but the Falcons closed the gap to
34-31 at intermission. They opened the second half
by outscoring the Pirates 7-2 and took their first
lead of the game at 38-36 when Daughtery drained a
three-pointer with 18:09 left in the second half.
The two teams traded leads 13 times the rest of the
second half.
On the night,
Cerritos was led by Perry's output, while freshman
guard Jazlyn Afusia
(St. Paul HS) added 13 points and six
rebounds, with Daughtery finishing with 10 points,
five assists and four rebounds. Samantha Hansen came
off the bench for Orange Coast and led them with 21
points on 9-of-11 shooting and eight rebounds, as
the Pirates shot 53% from the field. Amanda Deal
added 10 points, while Danielle Keneipp finished
with nine points and six caroms.
