Last year, the Cerritos College
women’s cross country team came in fourth place at
the state championships. This season, with a group
of five freshmen and two sophomores competing at
Woodward Park in Fresno on Saturday, the Falcons
earned a fourth place finish with 176 team points.
Glendale College won the state championship with 42
team points, followed by Orange Coast College (95)
and El Camino College (153).
A trio of
freshmen were the first to finish for Cerritos, as
they had their five scoring finishers conclude the
three-mile race within less than a minute of each
other. The freshman duo of Shannon Simpson (Fountain
Valley HS) and Lucy Beuster (Kennedy
HS) basically ran shoulder to shoulder the
majority of the way, as they finished in 34th
and 35th places, respectively. Simpson
crossed the finish line in 19:40, while Beuster was
next at 19:41. Not far behind was freshman Sarah
Muniz (Santa Fe HS), who finished in a
group of runners to come in 42nd place
with a time of 19:53. Edging out a few runners was
sophomore Tawny Vilchis (Long Beach Poly
HS), who came in 57th place with her
time of 20:18. Finishing ahead of another group to
come in 71st place overall was freshman
Daisy Perez (Bell Gardens HS), who
came in 71st place in a time of 20:37 to
round out the team’s scoring.
Also
competing for the Falcons, but not factoring in the
team scoring were freshman Jessica Cos (Norwalk
HS), who came in 95th place in 21:04,
while sophomore China Fleming (Warren
HS/Long Beach City College) was clocked in
21:18, good for 107th place overall. |
