Cerritos College freshman cross
country runner Shannon Simpson (Fountain
Valley HS) appeared to enjoy running the cliffs
overlooking the Pacific Ocean at the Santa Barbara
Invitational on Saturday. With her time of 20:13
over the three-mile course, she finished in eighth
place overall and helped the Falcons to a third
place showing as a team. Cerritos compiled 110 team
points and just missed out on beating conference
rival El Camino College, who came in second place
with 107 points, while Glendale College won the meet
with 25 team points. The team will now take a week
off before they run in the South Coast Conference
Championships at Hartwell Park in Lakewood.
As a team, the Falcons ran extremely well, as six of
their eight runners finished in the top 38 runners
out of the 131 that competed. Joining Simpson with a
fine race was freshman Lucy Beuster, who was
clocked in 21:00, which netted her a 19th
place showing, while freshman Sarah Muniz (Santa
Fe HS) placed 24th overall in a time
of 21:25. A group of three runners were next to
finish for Cerritos, with freshman Daisy Perez
(Bell Gardens HS) coming in 35th
place at 21:46 and freshman Jessica Cos
taking 37th place in a time of 21:54.
Right behind them was sophomore Tawny Vilchis
(Long Beach Poly HS), who just missed out on
contributing to the team score, as she was the sixth
Falcon to finish, coming in 38th place at
21:57.
Also
running for Cerritos were sophomore China Fleming
(Warren HS/Long Beach City College) in 49th
place at 22:43 and sophomore Angelica Negrete
(Western HS), who finished in 23:06, which
was good for 59th place overall. |
