In their first meet of the season,
the Cerritos College women’s cross country team
found themselves running in sweltering heat, but
didn’t let that stop them from remaining in bunches
over the course of the race. Running in the Cal
State Fullerton Invitational at Carbon Canyon Park
in Brea, the Falcons placed fifth out of seven teams
with 106 team points. The meet also marked the first
collegiate competition for the team’s freshmen.
Freshman
Shannon Simpson (Fountain Valley HS) was
the first Cerritos runner to complete the 5K course,
as she came in 27th place out of 85
runners and was clocked in 20:15. She was followed
closely by freshman Lucy Buester, who came in
34th place at 20:26, while sophomore
Tawny Vilchis (Long Beach Poly HS) was a
40th place finisher in 20:46. The rest of
the team’s scoring was comprised of freshman
Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS), who finished
in 20:53 and sophomore Angelica Negrete (Western
HS) in 21:01.
Rounding out
the team was freshman Daisy Perez (Bell
Gardens HS), who finished 47th
overall in 21:03, freshman Jessica Cos, who
came in 61st place in 22:25 and freshman
Nancy Ceron (Norwalk HS) in 77th
place in a time of 24:39. |
