In an early-season precursor to the
state championships, the Cerritos College women’s
cross country team made a strong showing at the
Fresno Invitational on Saturday, as they came in
fourth place out of 21 teams. The Falcons compiled
117 team points and were barely edged for third
place by Southwestern College, who had 112 team
points. Orange Coast College won the meet with 34
points, with South Coast Conference rival Mt. San
Antonio College coming in second place with 94 team
points. Cerritos will now compete in the Orange
Coast Classic at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Running an
excellent race over the 3.1 mile course was
sophomore Tawny Vilchis (Long Beach Poly
HS), who finished sixth overall in a time of
19.34 and had two teammates join her in the top 20.
Freshmen Lucy Beuster and Shannon Simpson
(Fountain Valley HS) finished strong to help
the team in their overall effort. Beuster placed 15th
overall in 20:00, while Simpson was right behind her
in a time of 20:17, good for 20th place.
The team scoring is comprised from the top five
finishers, with freshman Sarah Muniz (Santa
Fe HS) coming in 35th place in 20:46
and freshman Daisy Perez (Bell Gardens HS)
finishing the race in 20:58, good for 41st
place overall.
The rest of
the Falcon squad that competed in the invitational
included sophomores Angelica Negrete (Western
HS; 42nd place, 20:58) and China
Fleming (Warren HS/Long Beach City College;
48th place, 21:27), along with freshmen
Jessica Cos (60th place; 21:40)
and Nancy Ceron (Norwalk HS; 117th;
24:21). |
