Sparked by a strong showing from
several runners, the Cerritos College women’s cross
country team turned in a third place performance at
the Orange Coast Classic on Saturday morning. The
Falcons, who had three runners finish in the top 20,
amassed 127 team points and were just beaten out for
second place by Southwestern College, who had 126
points. The host Pirates won the meet with 56 team
points. The team will now have a week off before
competing in the Southern California Preview meet,
which will be held October 6 at Irvine Park.
For the
second consecutive week, sophomore Tawny Vilchis
(Long Beach Poly HS) finished in sixth place
in an invitational, as she was clocked in 20.42.70
over the 3.1 mile course, which is full of hills and
was wet after a long rain the night before. She was
followed closely by freshmen teammates Shannon
Simpson (Fountain Valley HS) and Lucy
Beuster, who came in 12th and 13th
place, respectively. Simpson finished the race in a
time of 21:24.10, while Beuster crossed the finish
line in 21:29.50. Also running well were sophomore
Angelica Negrete (Western HS), who ran
her best race of the season and came in 21st
place in a time of 21:55.50, with freshman Daisy
Perez (Bell Gardens HS) rounding out the
team’s top five runners in a time of 22:03.02, good
for 24th place.
Freshman
Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS), who came in 28th
place out of the 87 runners, finished in 22:26.00,
while sophomore China Fleming (Downey
HS/Long Beach City College; 36th,
23:06.20), freshman Jessica Cos (38th
place; 23:26.30) and freshman Nancy Ceron (Norwalk
