After giving the
majority of the team the week off, Cerritos College
women's cross country coach John Goldman
saw his team close the gap with two of the top teams
in Southern California at the Santa Barbara
Invitational, which took place at Leadbetter Beach
on Saturday. The Falcons, ranked #3 in Southern
California, had their five runners finish in the top
17 and finished in third place out of the 17 teams
that competed. Cerritos compiled 62 team points and
trailed just Orange Coast College (45 team points)
and Glendale College (54). The five runners in the
top 17 finishers was the best team finish of any
school in the invitational. Cerritos will now take a
week off before competing in the South Coast
Conference Championships on October 31 at El Camino
College.
Maneuvering the
asphalt and the shoreline in a very strong manner
was sophomore
Sarah Muniz
(Santa Fe HS), who finished the course in
19:29, which was the seventh fastest time out of the
160 competitors. She was the third of a tight pack
to finish the race, while that group also featured
the other four Falcon runners at one point.
Sophomore
Shannon
Simpson (Fountain Valley HS)
posted a time of 19:45, which placed her 11th
overall, while the trio of sophomores
Robyn
Guggiana (Warren HS/Cal State Long
Beach),
Lucy
Buster (Kennedy HS) and
Alison Bartosch (Squalicum (WA)
HS/Whatcom (WA) CC) finished 15th through 17th.
Guggiana was the 15th runner to finish the race in
19:56, while Beuster (19:58) and Bartsoch (20:00)
were close behind.
