This Week's Sports Schedule

10.31.08 - TEAM WINS THIRD SCC TITLE IN FIVE YEARS
For the third time in the last five years, the Cerritos College women's cross country team captured the South Coast Conference championship. With their tremendous performance on Friday at Columbia Park in Torrance, the Falcons will now compete in the Southern California Championship, which will be held in Bakersfield next Saturday.

The Falcons withstood a 1-2 performance from a pair of Mt. San Antonio College runners and claimed five of the top 10 competitors to record 31 team points, while the Mounties came in second place with 42 team points. Entering the meet, Cerritos was ranked #4 in the state and Mt. SAC sixth.

Sophomore Shannon Simpson (Fountain Valley HS) placed third over the 3.1-mile course in a time of 19:13 and trailed only Christine Cortez (18:25) and Lenore Moreno (18:55) of Mt. SAC. Cerritos excelled in bunching their runners and had strong finishes from their top runners to claim the title. Sophomores Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS) and Robyn Guggiana (Warren HS/Cal State Long Beach) finished seventh (19:31) and eighth (19:39), respectively, while freshman Allison Garcia (Sunny Hills HS) turned in her best time of the year with a 19:48 clocking, which earned her ninth place overall. Sophomore Lucy Beuster (Kennedy HS) closed out the team scoring with a 10th place showing in 19:50.

Although the team score and championship had been decided, the Falcons also received a great performance from freshman Daisy Perez (Bell Gardens HS), as she was clocked in 19:57, good for 13th out of the 55 runners. Six more Cerritos runners competed, including sophomore Alison Bartosch (Squalicum (WA) HS/Whatcom (WA) CC; 15th place, 20:06), freshman Erica Sandoval (La Mirada HS; 23rd place; 21:10), freshman Selena Gallegos (Santa Fe HS; 27th place, 21:51), freshman Brianna Crum (Kennedy HS; 30th place, 22:17), freshman Misheal Jacho (Warren HS; 49th place, 25:19) and freshman Nadia Jurado (Long Beach Wilson HS; 52nd place, 26:47).
