Getting their
first look at the location for the state
championships, the Cerritos College women's cross
country team not only showed how strong and deep
their team is, they did so by holding off several
other very good teams. Aside from Orange Coast
College, who won the Fresno Invitational with 35
teams points, the second place Falcons (75 points)
fought off South Coast Conference rival Mt. San
Antonio College, who came in third place with 86
team points. Cerritos will now get another shot at
knocking off Orange Coast when they travel to the
Orange Coast Classic, which will be held at Fairview
Park in Costa Mesa at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Continuing their
efforts to bunch their runners together, the Falcons
had sophomore Shannon Simpson (Fountain
Valley HS) blaze through the 3.1-mile course in
a time of 19:20, which placed her seventh out of the
198 runners in the meet. A trio of sophomore
Cerritos runners were right behind, led by
Robyn Guggiana (Warren HS/Cal State
Long Beach), who placed 15th overall in a time
of 19:37. Joining her were Lucy Beuster
(Kennedy HS) in 16th place in a time of
19:39, while Sarah Muniz (Santa
Fe HS), who finished in 19:42, good for 17th
place.
Fighting for the
team's fifth and final scoring spot were sophomores
Daisy Perez (Bell Gardens HS)
and Alison Bartosch (Squalicum
(WA) HS/Whatcom (WA) CC), with Perez finishing
in 20:03 (29th place) and Bartosch four seconds back
and placing 30th.
The remainder of
the Falcon squad included freshman Allison
Garcia (Sunny Hills HS; 39th
place; 20:23), freshman Brianna Crum
(Kennedy HS; 54th place; 20:49), freshman
Erica Sandavol (La Mirada
HS; 86th place; 21:51), freshman
Selena Gallegos (Santa Fe HS; 95th
place; 22:06), freshman Amanda Kemblowski
(Calvary Chapel HS; 113th place; 22:45),
freshman Misheal Jaco (Warren
HS; 156th place; 24:51) and freshman
Nadia Jurado (Long Beach Wilson;
183rd place; 27:13).
