With one of the
best groups of runners in school history, the
Cerritos College women's cross country team
continues to improve with every meet. On Saturday,
the Falcons placed four of their runners in the top
12 and parlayed that into a second place finish at
the Orange Coast Classic at Fairview Park in Costa
Mesa. The team finished with 62 team points and held
off South Coast Conference rival Mt. San Antonio
College (67 points), while host Orange Coast won the
invitational with 49 team points. The team will get
a week off at the midway point in the season before
heading to Bakersfield for the Southern California
Preview Meet on October 3rd.
Sophomore
Robyn Guggiana (Warren HS/Cal State
Long Beach) stayed near the head of the pack
the entire race and finished with a strong time of
19:55.66 to come in 6th place out of the 173
competitors. In their efforts to remain in that
tight pack, Guggiana was followed closely by her
sophomore teammates, as the trio of Falcons fared
better in their 2-through-4 runners than the
Pirates. Shannon Simpson (Fountain
Valley HS) finished the 5K race in 20:04.33,
while Lucy Beuster (Kennedy HS)
was clocked in 20:07.33, good for 10th place.
Sarah Muniz (Santa Fe HS)
was right behind in 12th place at 20:16.71. The top
five runners comprised the team's score, with
freshman Allison Garcia (Sunny
Hills HS) sneaking into that spot with a time
of 21:01.90, good for 29th place overall.
Just missing out
on being a part of the team scoring was sophomore
Alison Bartosch (Squalicum, WA
HS/Whatcom, WA CC), who finished right behind
Garcia in 30th place with a time of 21:04.72. Also
running well were sophomore Daisy Perez
(Bell Gardens HS), who came in 34th place
overall in a time of 21:20.85, while freshman
Brianna Crum (Kennedy HS)
finished in 21:35.62, good for 41st place.
Also running for
the Falcons were freshmen Erica Sandavol
(La Mirada HS; 60th place; 22:05.35),
Amanda Kemblowski (Calvary
Chapel HS; 79th place; 22:42.89),
Selena Gallagos (Santa Fe HS;
112th place; 23:54.41), Misheal Jaco
(Warren HS; 139th place; 25:27.93) and
Nadia Jurado (Long Beach Wilson
HS; 162nd place; 27:41.85).
