Because of their
ability to run together as a cohesive unit, the
Cerritos College women's cross country team was able
to hold off a pair of schools to lock down second
place at the Crystal Springs Invitational, which
took place on Friday at the College of San Mateo.
The Falcons, who were the only Southern California
school in the invitational, finished with 92 team
points, which narrowly beat third place De Anza
College (93 team points) and fourth place American
River College (94). Hartnell College won the meet
with 74 team points.
Cerritos had their
five runners that comprised the team score finish in
the top 26 finishers, while De Anza saw their fifth
runner come in 39th place, while American River had
their fifth runner place 38th. The Falcons will now
run in the Brubaker Invitational on Saturday, which
will take place at Irvine Park in Santa Ana.
Finishing the race
first for Cerritos was freshman
Erica
Sandoval (La Mirada HS), who
came in 8th place out of the 113 runners in a time
of 19:04.61. She was followed closely behind by
freshman
Sandra
Flores (El Rancho HS), who
finished in a time of 20:40.92, good for 17th place,
while sophomore
Selena
Gallegos (Santa Fe HS) was
22nd overall in a time of 20:53.81. The final two
finishers who helped the Falcons finish in second
place as a team were freshman
Melissa Byrd
(La Mirada HS), who came in 26th place
overall with a time of 21:01.02, while sophomore
Allison Garcia (Sunny Hills HS)
was the 28th runner to cross the finish line in a
time of 21:07.35.
Cerritos had eight
more compete in the race and they included
