The Cerritos
College women's cross country team had their top
seven runners finish within a 44-second span at the
Orange Coast Classic on Saturday, which was a strong
indicator as to why the team finished in fourth
place out of 18 schools that competed. The Falcons
finished with 135 team points and were narrowly
edged out by Los Angeles Trade-Tech College for
third place, as they ended up with 127 team points.
The host Pirates won the meet with 24 teams points,
while another South Coast Conference team. Mt. San
Antonio College, placed second with 76 team points.
The team will now take a week off before competing
in the Crystal Springs Invitational in San Mateo.
Helping the team
to their high finish was sophomore
Erika
Sandoval (La Mirada HS),
who finished the 3.1-mile race in a time of
20:22.58, which put her in 22nd place out of the 176
runners. She was followed closely by sophomore
Allison Garcia (Sunny Hills HS),
who came in 28th place in 20:26.63, while freshman
teammate
Sandra
Flores (El Rancho HS) was
right behind in 29th place in a time of 20:30.49.
The final two runners to account for the team's
point total were freshman
Briana Freerksen (El Rancho HS),
a 33rd place finisher in 20:41.95, as well as
freshman
Melisa Byrd
(La Mirada HS) who finished the race in
20:57.84, good for 42nd place overall.
Not far behind and
just missing out on the top five were freshmen Ariana
Sandoval (Valencia HS), who
came in 45th place in 21:04.92 and
Cassandra
Mejia (El Rancho HS) in 46th
place in 21:06.02.
The remainder of
the runners included Desirae Rivas
(66th place, 22:00.16),

Gallegos (Santa Fe HS; 89th
place, 22:54.25),
Jacqueline Montenegro (Downey HS;
104th place, 23:24.83), Nadia Jurado
(Long Beach Wilson HS; 108th place,

place, 24:01.13),
Melissa delCastillo (Norwalk HS;
120th place, 24:23.34) and
Karen Jacho
(Warren HS; 144th place, 26:35.96).
