This Week's Sports Schedule

09.19.09 - GROUPING HELPS TEAM DO WELL AT ORANGE COAST
The Cerritos College women's cross country team had their top seven runners finish within a 44-second span at the Orange Coast Classic on Saturday, which was a strong indicator as to why the team finished in fourth place out of 18 schools that competed. The Falcons finished with 135 team points and were narrowly edged out by Los Angeles Trade-Tech College for third place, as they ended up with 127 team points. The host Pirates won the meet with 24 teams points, while another South Coast Conference team. Mt. San Antonio College, placed second with 76 team points. The team will now take a week off before competing in the Crystal Springs Invitational in San Mateo.

Helping the team to their high finish was sophomore Erika Sandoval (La Mirada HS), who finished the 3.1-mile race in a time of 20:22.58, which put her in 22nd place out of the 176 runners. She was followed closely by sophomore Allison Garcia (Sunny Hills HS), who came in 28th place in 20:26.63, while freshman teammate Sandra Flores (El Rancho HS) was right behind in 29th place in a time of 20:30.49. The final two runners to account for the team's point total were freshman Briana Freerksen (El Rancho HS), a 33rd place finisher in 20:41.95, as well as freshman Melisa Byrd (La Mirada HS) who finished the race in 20:57.84, good for 42nd place overall.
