2007-08 BACK-TO-BACK STATE CHAMPIONS
2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

12.10.09 - Cerritos women's soccer to
help orphanage
For the second year
in a row, members of the Cerritos
College women's soccer team will be
travelling to Mexico to give back during
the holidays. Head coach Ruben Gonzalez
and his wife Senaida, along with members
of his South Coast Conference
championship team will be going to Casa Hogar
Santa Teresita de Jesus Orphanage for
Girls in Tijuana on January 6. The
orphanage houses 58 girls from 3 to 15
years of age.
"We'll be going for Día de los Reyes (Three Kings Day), which
represents the arrival in Bethlehem of Wise Men
bearing gifts for the baby Jesus," said Gonzalez.
"On January 6, the kids wake up to find toys and
gifts left by the Reyes Magos (Magi). So right now,
we're in the process of collecting monetary
donations, as well as toys and clothes for us to
bring to the orphanage."...[more]
11.24.09 - Season ends for Falcons after
1-0 loss
Although the two-time
defending state champion and defending
national champion Cerritos College
women's soccer team had another solid
season, they were seeded #8 for the
Southern California Regional Playoffs
because of their weak conference. The
result was a second round road game at
#1-seeded Santiago Canyon College on
Tuesday that finished in a 1-0 loss,
which ended the Falcons season. Just two
seasons ago, Cerritos (19-3-0) defeated
Santiago Canyon in the state
championship game for their first of two
straight state titles...[more]
11.21.09 - Two-time defending champs
shut out SD Mesa
As
the two-time defending state champions,
the Cerritos College women's soccer team
is well aware of the potential for
upsets in the first round. The Falcons,
seeded #8 despite their 18-2-0 record
entering the playoffs, dispatched
#9-seeded San Diego Mesa, 4-0 in the
first round of the Southern California
Regional Playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
Cerritos (19-2-0) will now advance to
the second round with a possible meeting
with Santiago Canyon College, the
top-seeded team, as well as the
#1-ranked team in the country. Back in
2007, Cerritos defeated Santiago Canyon
for the state championship. The shutout
win also set a new school record with
their 19th, breaking the old record of
18 shutouts set last season.
"It looks like we will play Santiago
Canyon, which will be a game good enough
for a Final Four match," said head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "But I don't think
it matters where or when we play them, because
in order to win the championship you have to
beat very good teams. We're just getting one in
the second round."...[more]
11.17.09 - Men's and women's soccer
playoffs announced
Both the Cerritos
College men's and women's soccer teams
won the state championship last season,
while the women were crowned the
National Champions and the men finished
ranked second. On Saturday, both teams
will begin defense of their respective
titles at home. The Falcon men's team,
which placed second in the South Coast
Conference, was seeded #3 and will host
#14-seeded Palomar College at 11:00 a.m.
on Saturday. As for the women, who are
the two-time defending state champions
and winners of the South Coast
Conference, they were seeded #8 and will
play at 2:00 p.m. against #9-seeded San
Diego Mesa College...[more]
11.13.09 - Cerritos shuts out East LA in
season finale
The Cerritos College
women's soccer team ended their regular
season at home on Friday with a 2-0
South Coast Conference win over East Los
Angeles College. The Falcons, who will
now wait until Monday to find out where
they are seeded for the Southern
California Regional Playoffs, are the
two-time defending state champions and
were named the national champions last
season. The first round of the playoffs
is scheduled for next Saturday.
The Falcons got on the board in the
25th minute when freshman
Jessica
Ortiz (Narbonne HS) sent a
perfect corner kick to freshman
Tatiana
Cortes (La Mirada HS), who
headed the ball into the net. Ortiz had just checked
into the game for the corner kick and made an
immediate impact. In fact, Ortiz had a hand in the
second goal, as she scored her 13th on the season
right before halftime...[more]
11.10.09 - Falcons stunned by El Camino,
2-1
For the first 728
minutes she played in goal, Cerritos
College freshman
Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS)
had not allowed an opponent to score on
her. But, with just four minutes left in
a 1-1 tie against visiting El Camino
College, Ropp saw a slow roller from
Justine Zavala go between her legs and
the Warriors posted a 2-1 upset over the
Falcons. The loss drops the Falcons
record to 18-2-0 overall and 11-2-0
in SCC with just one regular season game
remaining. Cerritos will host East Los
Angeles College at 3:00 p.m. on
Friday.
After falling behind 1-0 in the 27th
minute on a goal by KayC
Wharton, as her chip shot bounced slowly in the net
after it got over freshman goalkeeper
Erika Trejo's
(Artesia HS) head. Trejo came out to cut
the ball down, but Wharton was able to get to the
ball and lift it over Trejo for a goal. The two
goals by El Camino are only the fifth and sixth
goals Cerritos has allowed all season...[more]
11.06.09 - Win over LA Harbor marks 11th
straight shutout
In their 2-0 South Coast Conference
win over Los Angeles Harbor College on
Friday afternoon, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team posted their 11th
straight shutout in a row and their 17th
on the year. The Falcons (18-1-0
overall, 11-1-0 SCC), who are the
defending national champions and
two-time state champions, have just two
more regular season games remaining
before they open Southern California
Regional Playoff action. The team will
play their final two games at home, as
they host El Camino College on Tuesday
at East Los Angeles College on Friday,
with both games starting at 3:00 p.m...[more]
11.03.09 - Early goal holds up in 1-0
victory
It only took a little
over a minute for the Cerritos College
women's soccer to score against Long
Beach City College in their South Coast
Conference game on Tuesday. But that
would be the only offense of the game,
as the Falcons recorded a 1-0 win over
the Vikings. The defending national
champions and two-time defending state
champions improved to 17-1-0 overall and
10-1-0 in conference play, while LB City
fell to 11-6 overall and 8-3 in
conference play. Cerritos will now
travel to Los Angeles Harbor College on
Friday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
On that goal, the Falcons took possession
of the ball, where freshman
Jessica Ortiz (Narbonne
HS) took a pass from freshman
Miranda
Madrid (St. Joseph's HS)
and scored her 11th goal of the season.
Ortiz was right in front of Viking
goalkeeper Sara Thatcher and chipped the
ball into the lower corner of the
net...[more]
10.30.09 - Falcons shut out ninth
straight opponent
If the Cerritos
College women's soccer team is trying to
make a point that their defense is just
as good, if not better, than last year's
National Championship team, they took
another step on Friday when they shut
out ECC Compton Center for their ninth
consecutive shutout in a 6-0 win. It was
also the 15th of the season, which is
three shy of tying the record of 18 the
Falcons set last season. The team has
also allowed just four goals all year,
with the record-low of 10 goals allowed
also set last year. Cerritos (16-1-0
overall, 9-1-0 South Coast Conference)
will now host Long Beach City at 3:00
p.m. on Tuesday in another conference
match...[more]
10.27.09 - Ruby Leon scores five
first-half goals in win
Freshman
Ruby Leon (Fontana HS)
had a first half that most people dream
about. In the span of 38 minutes, the
Cerritos College women's soccer player
scored five goals in a game at Pasadena
City College on Tuesday afternoon, which
wound up a 6-0 victory for the Falcons.
The five-goal first half sets a new
school record, while her five tallies in
a game was also one shy of tying the
school record of six goals set by
Monique Cisneros last
season. The win improved the Falcons
record to 15-1-0 overall and 8-1-1 over,
while the Lancers dropped to 6-8-1
overall and 3-5-1 in conference. The
shutout was the eighth in a row for
Cerritos, who has outscored opponents
36-0 since a loss to Mt. San Antonio
ended their 46-game unbeaten streak. The
team will now travel to Compton on
Friday for a 4:00 p.m. conference game
against ECC Compton Center...[more]
10.23.09 - Quick-strike offense leads to
4-0 win
In the first half of
their South Coast Conference game, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
found the going tough against Mt. San
Antonio College. Unable to get their
offense on track, they decided to sit
back and wait for their opportunities,
instead of looking to force the action.
It paid off, as the Falcons scored four
second half goals for a convincing 4-0
win, which exacted revenge against the
Mounties, who posted a 3-1 win in their
first meeting. The victory by Cerritos
improves their record to 14-1-1 overall
and moves them into first place at 7-1-0
in the SCC, while Mt. SAC falls to 8-4-2
overall and 6-1-1. The team will now
travel to Pasadena City College for a
4:00 p.m. game next Tuesday.
Early in the second half, the Falcons
struck when freshman
Ruby
Leon (Fontana HS) took the
ball down the baseline and took a shot. The
ball slightly tipped off Mountie Sarah Hanna and
went into the net. The goal seemed to take a lot of
pressure of Cerritos, who began to open up their
passing and spread the field wider. The result was a
series of offensive attacks that pinned the Mt. SAC
defense back against the wall...[more]
10.20.09 - Gandarilla leads Cerritos to
3-0 victory
Sophomore forward
Nancy Gandarilla (Long
Beach Millikan HS) scored three
times in the first half for the Cerritos
College women's soccer team in a South
Coast Conference game at East Los
Angeles College on Tuesday afternoon.
The three goals held up, as the Falcons
posted a 3-0 win to improve to 13-1-0
overall and 6-1-0 in conference play.
The defending state and national
champions, who are currently ranked #4
in the country, will look to avenge
their only loss of the season when they
host Mt. San Antonio College at 4:00
p.m. on Friday. Back on September 29,
the Mounties defeated Cerritos 3-1,
which snapped their 46-game unbeaten
streak.
Gandarilla opened
the scoring in the 8th minute after freshman
midfielder
Ruby Leon
(Fontana HS) controlled the ball on the
left sideline and sent a ball in to the top of the
box. Gandarilla was there to receive the ball and
scored her first of three goals. The second came
just four minutes later after the Huskies goalkeeper
was unable to clear the ball away. Gandarilla took
the ball and sent a hard shot into the lower corner.
It was a repeat performance in the 20th minute with Gandarilla
collecting another bad clearance attempt and calmly
scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season...[more]
10.16.09 - Falcons post fifth straight
shutout win
Ever since their
stunning 3-1 loss to Mt. San Antonio
College three weeks ago, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team has made a
point to shore up their defense. It has
shown in all five of their games since
then, as the Falcons have shut out each
opponent, with the latest being a 2-0
South Coast Conference win at El Camino
Friday afternoon. Cerritos (12-1-0
overall, 5-1-0 SCC), ranked #6 in the
country, will now travel to East Los
Angeles College for a 4:00 p.m.
conference match on Tuesday...[more]
10.13.09 - Cerritos pulls away for 6-0
victory
It took nearly a full
first half of action for the Cerritos
College women's soccer team to find the
back of the net. But when they did,
goals came in bunches. The Falcons broke
open a 1-0 South Coast Conference home
game against Los Angeles Harbor College
by scoring five second half goals in the
span of 13 minutes for a 6-0 victory.
With the win, Cerritos improved to
11-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in conference
action, while the Seahawks dropped to
5-3-3 and 2-2-0. The Falcons will now
travel to El Camino College for a 4:00
p.m. conference game on Friday.
Although Cerritos only scored once in
the first half, they controlled every
aspect of the game against the Seahawks,
who played the game without three
regulars who were forced to sit out.
Just before the end of the first half,
freshman
Justine Telles (St. Paul HS) lifted
a ball from just outside the box over the
outstretched hands of LA Harbor goalkeeper Domitila
Hernandez. The ball came to Telles after Hernandez
cleared the ball after the initial shot...[more]
10.09.09 - Falcons post important
shutout win over LB City
The Cerritos College
women's soccer team went on the road and
came back with a big 3-0 South Coast
Conference win over Long Beach City
College on Friday afternoon. The Falcons
(10-1-1 overall, 3-1-1 SCC), ranked #6
in the country, held off an attacking
Vikings (6-4-1 overall, 3-1-0 SCC) in
the second half to post the win. The
team will now host Los Angeles Harbor
College at 4:00 p.m. next Tuesday...[more]
10.06.09 - Ortiz and Gandarilla lead
Falcons to win
Freshman forward
Jessica Ortiz (Narbonne HS)
scored a pair of goals and assisted on another, while sophomore forward
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach Millikan
HS) tied a school record with four assists, as the
Cerritos College women's soccer team defeated ECC
Compton Center 8-0 in a South Coast Conference match
on Tuesday. The win improved the Falcons record to
9-1-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. They
will now travel to Long Beach City College for a
4:00 p.m. conference game on Friday.
As for Ortiz, she accounted for all three of her
points in the second half,
with one goal coming off a direct kick and the
assist coming on a
corner kick with freshman
Morgan
Thompson (Mayfair HS) scoring
the goal. The four helpers by Gandarilla
ties the school record set by Erin Kingsbury
in 1995 and gives her 15 for the season. The school
record for most assists in a season is 18, set by Corina
Villegas last season...[more]
10.02.09 - Message heard loud and clear
in win
Looking to light a
fire under a few players, Cerritos
College women's soccer head coach
Ruben Gonzalez decided to
sit a few starters in their first game
after a 3-1 South Coast Conference loss
to Mt. San Antonio. Although the Falcons
didn't score in the first half of their
home game against Pasadena City College
in the first half, they seemed to get
the message in the second half, scoring
four times for a 4-0 victory. The win
improves the team's record to 8-1-0
overall and 1-1-0 in the SCC, while the
Lancers fell to 3-5-0 overall and 0-2-0
in conference. Cerritos will now host ECC
Compton Center at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
"I told the players that the way we
played (against Mt. SAC) can't happen
again," said Gonzalez. "We sat a few of
our starters to give them a chance to
watch the game and hope that they didn't
like the feeling of sitting. They played
better in the second half and especially
after we finally scored. It seemed to
relax them a little because Pasadena was
holding everyone back and seemed content
with a scoreless game or even a 1-0 or
2-0 loss. We tend to put a lot of
pressure on ourselves, so hopefully with
the loss out of the way, we can regain
our focus."...[more]
09.29.09 - Unbeaten streak snapped by
Mt. SAC
On Tuesday afternoon,
the Cerritos College women's soccer team
saw their 46-game unbeaten streak
(41-0-5) come to an end with a 3-1 South
Coast Conference loss to Mt. San Antonio
College. The Falcons (7-1-0, 0-1-0) had
not tasted defeat since a 2-1 loss
against Long Beach City College on
October 16, 2007. The two-time defending
state champions and defending national
champions will look to start another
streak on Friday at 4:00 p.m. when they
host Pasadena City College...[more]
09.22.09 - Shutout streak ended in 3-1
victory
It took six-plus
games and 546 minutes, but it finally
happened. The Cerritos College women's
soccer team allowed an opponent to score
a goal. The Falcons, ranked #1 in the
nation and state, defeated Taft College,
3-1 in a non-conference game at Cerritos
to improve their record to 7-0-0 on the
season. The shutout streak marked the
second year in a row the team opened the
season by shutting out multiple teams.
Last year, the Falcons didn't allow a
goal until their ninth game of the year.
Cerritos will now open South Coast
Conference action next Tuesday in a 6:00
p.m. game at Mt. San Antonio College.
In the win over the Cougars, the Falcons
only needed a minute to get on the
board, as freshman midfielder
Tatiana Cortes (La Mirada HS)
chipped a ball into the net after receiving a
pass from sophomore forward
Nancy Gandarilla (Long Beach
Millikan HS). Cerritos picked up their
other two goals three minutes apart before the
first half ended. In the 38th minute, freshman
midfielder
Ruby
Leon (Fontana HS) was
tackled just inside the box and was awarded a
penalty kick. She calmly scored her eighth goal
of the year. Gandarilla closed out the team's
scoring in the 41st minute when freshman forward
Daniela Mendez (Internacional
de Guatemala HS) fed her a pass as she was
streaking toward the box and Gandarilla put her
seventh goal into the net...[more]
09.18.09 - Strong second half gives
team 4-0 win
Through the first 45
minutes of their non-conference home
opener against Palomar College, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
looked as though they hadn't played in
six days. But after a thought-provoking
halftime speech from head coach
Ruben Gonzalez, the Falcons
put four in the net for a 4-0 victory.
The win extended the program's unbeaten
streak to 45 games (40-0-5), while they
are now 6-0-0 and have outscored
opponents 27-0 on the year. The team
will host Taft College next Tuesday at
4:00 p.m. in another non-conference

09.12.09 - Defending champs improve
unbeaten streak
It's been almost two
years (October 16, 2007) since the
Cerritos College women's soccer team has
lost a game. After disposing of both
Oxnard College (6-0) and Cosumnes River
College (3-0) over the weekend, the
Falcons have gone 39-0-5 in their last
44 games. In that time, the team has won
a pair of state championships, while
they were crowned the national champions
after last season. Cerritos (5-0-0) is
ranked #1 in the state and nation and
have outscored opponents 23-0 through
their first five games. The team will
