2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

12.20.11 - Cerritos team to provide
holiday cheer
For
the fifth year in a row, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team will be
making a trip to Tijuana, Mexico to
bring toys and gifts to the Casa Hogar
Santa Teresita de Jesus Orphanage for
Girls. The annual event allows head
coach
Ruben Gonzalez and his
wife, Senaida, to bring holiday joy to a
group of girls from ages 2-15, while it
introduces several of his players to a
culture that has effected their lives,
as well...[more]
12.14.11 - Soccer teams end season
ranked nationally
Heading
into the Southern California Regional
Playoffs, both the Cerritos College
men's and women's soccer teams were
considered to be favorites to advance to
the state championships. The men were
seeded #2, while the women, who were
ranked #1 nationally, held the top seed
for the post-season. However, both teams
were upset in their first game of the
post-season, subsequently ending their
seasons. Despite their early exit, both
programs were ranked in the top 10 in
the final poll of the season by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of
America for Division III
(non-scholarship) colleges...[more]
11.21.11 - Falcons sweep conference
awards
  On
the heels of winning their sixth
straight South Coast Conference
championship, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team swept through the
conference awards, as 10 players were
honored, along with
Ruben Gonzalez, who was named
the Coach of the Year for the second
time. The Falcons, who were upset in the
first round of the Southern California
Regional Playoffs, concluded their
season with a 20-2-0 record. Freshman
Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS),
who led the Falcons in scoring, was
named the conference's Offensive Player
of the Year, while freshman
Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS)
was chosen the Defensive Player of the
Year.
Joining Nanez and Carter were freshman
goalkeeper
Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat
HS), sophomore defender
Susana Mendoza (Paloma Valley
HS), freshman midfielder Cheslea
Villegas (Bishop Amat HS)
and freshman defender
Karina Sandoval (Universidad
de Guadalajara). Named to the 2nd
Team were sophomore midfielder

11.19.11 - Cerritos shocked in first
round upset loss
Heading
into the First Round of the Southern
California Regional Playoffs, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team had
high hopes of winning their third state
championship in school history, as they
were seeded #1 with a 20-1-0 record and
held the nation's top ranking. However,
the Falcons were victims of one of the
biggest upsets in recent memory, as they
were eliminated from the playoffs with a
1-0 home loss to #16-seeded Orange Coast
College (14-4-4). The loss was their
second in a row, and only losses of the
season. A week earlier, Cerritos was
shut out by San Bernardino Valley
College, who upset #2-seeded Santa
Barbara City College the same time the
Falcons were being defeated. Prior to
their back-to-back shutouts, Cerritos
had averaged 4.2 goals a game and had
scored as many as six goals in a game
six times on the year. It was the first
time in the seven-year career of head
coach
Ruben Gonzalez that the team had been shutout in back-to-back games and just the eighth overall.
The lone goal of the game came in the
24th minute on a corner kick by Nicole Vanderlaan that Jessica Parker was able to get a header past freshman goalkeeper
Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat HS). The Pirate defense withstood a late first-half offensive attack by the Falcons, which included a missed opportunity in the 43rd minute when a shot from 20 yards out was headed for the upper portion of the goal, but Orange Coast goalkeeper Katie O'Banion managed to get enough of the ball to deflect the shot off of the crossbar. With the ball sitting in front of the goal, OCC picked up some more luck when a pair of Cerritos forwards tripped over each other before the ball was kicked away by the Pirate defense...[more]
11.15.11 - Top seed awarded to Falcons
for playoffs
Although they saw their shot at a
perfect season end with a 1-0
non-conference loss to San Bernardino
Valley College in their final game of
the regular, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team was seeded #1 for
the upcoming Southern California
Regional Playoffs. The Falcons (20-1-0),
who won their sixth straight South Coast
Conference championship, will be hosting
#16-seeded Orange Coast College (12-4-4)
on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the first
round. Cerritos won back-to-back state
championships in 2007 and 2008, while
they earned their first National
Championship in 2008. At the start of
the post-season, the Falcons are
currently ranked #1 in the country by
the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America (NSCAA) for Division III
(non-scholarship) schools...[more]
11.11.11 - Cerritos suffers first loss
of the season
With their perfect
record on the line in the final regular
season game of the year, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team suffered
their first loss of the season, as they
dropped a 1-0 non-conference home game
against defending state champion San
Bernardino Valley College on Friday. The
loss probably won't prevent the Falcons
(20-1-0) from being the #1-seeded team
for the upcoming Southern California
Regional Playoffs. The teams will be
selected and seeded at Fullerton College
next Tuesday, with the first round to be
played on Saturday, November 19.
Coming onto the game, Cerritos had shut
out their last five opponents, but could
not get one past Wolverines
(13-5-3) goalkeeper Jennifer Keats,
although they outshot their opponent,
15-7. The Falcons had several chances to
score in both halves, but were turned
away and even had two excellent
opportunities to score in the final few
minutes of the game...[more]
11.10.11 - Falcons shut out fifth
straight opponent
For the fifth game in a
row, and eighth time in the last nine
games, the Cerritos College women's
soccer team shut out their opponent. On
Thursday, the Falcons concluded South
Coast Conference play with a 4-0 win at
East Los Angeles College to finish with
a 14-0-0 record, while they improved to
20-0-0 on the season. The undefeated
record was the second-ever in school
history (12-0-0 in 2006) and it marks
the fourth time in the last five
seasons the Cerritos finished unbeaten
in SCC play. The nation's top-ranked
team will conclude their regular season
on Friday at 3:00 p.m. when they host
defending state champion San Bernardino
Valley College...[more]
11.08.11 - Cerritos continues to
dominate
The Cerritos College
posted their fourth shutout in a row,
and 13th of the season, as they
dominated ECC Compton Center on Tuesday
to the tune of a 7-0 victory. The win by
the nation's top-ranked team improved
their record to 19-0-0 overall and
13-0-0 in the South Coast Conference
with just two regular season games
remaining. The Falcons, who clinched
their sixth conference championship in a
row two weeks ago, will travel to East
Los Angeles College for a 3:00 p.m. SCC
affair on Thursday and then finish with
a 3:00 p.m. non-conference game at home
against defending state champion San
Bernardino Valley College.
After going the first half without
scoring against ECC Compton Center, Cerritos scored all seven of their goals over a 34-minute span in the second half, with six of the them coming in 13 minutes. The scoring started in the 51st minute when freshman Lisette Lopez (Maywood Academy HS) sent a crossing pass from the right side, to freshman
Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS), who scored on a one-timer from 20 yards out. Five minutes later, freshman
Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS) was tripped in the box and freshman
Karina Sandoval (Universidad de Guadalajara) stepped in and converted the penalty kick...[more]
11.04.11 - Big win keeps streak alive
With only three games
left in the regular season, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team was able to
maintain their perfect season, as they
recorded a 6-0 South Coast Conference
win at Mt. San Antonio College on
Friday. The Falcons (18-0-0, 12-0-0)
remain ranked #1 in the country by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA) for Division III
(non-scholarship) and will travel to
face ECC Compton Center at Compton
College on Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. SCC
contest...[more]
11.01.11 - Falcons pick up 11th
shutout in 3-0 win
For
the 11th time this season, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team posted a
shutout, as they defeated Long Beach
City College, 3-0 in a South Coast
Conference match on Tuesday, The win
improved the Falcons record to 17-0-0
overall and 11-0-0 in the SCC, while
they remain the top-ranked team in
the nation by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
for Division III (non-scholarship)
schools. Cerritos will play their final
three conference games on the road, with
the first being a 4:00 pm. affair
against Mt. San Antonio College on
Friday.
"This was a rivalry game for us, so it
was important for us to come out strong
and play well," said head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "We brought a lot
of energy and wanted to continue to work on our
scoring balance. I think we have six players who
have scored at least four goals this year and we
want to continue to be a team that can strike
from anywhere on the field. Balance is important
to us and getting early goal allowed us to work
on some things as we prepare for the playoffs."...[more]
10.28.11 - Late goal enough for
Cerritos against El Camino
It
took longer than anticipated, but the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
needed 71 minutes before they finally
scored a goal against El Camino College
in a South Coast Conference home affair
on Friday. The Falcons (16-0-0, 10-0-0),
who are the top-ranked team in the
country by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) for
Division 111 (non-scholarship) schools,
put constant pressure on the Warrior
(11-5-1, 6-4-0) defense the entire game,
but couldn't score until late in the
game. Cerritos will host Long Beach City
College at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday before
playing their final three conference
games on the road...[more]
10.25.11 - Win keeps Falcons
undefeated
Continuing their best
start in school history, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team remained
undefeated with their 6-2 South Coast
Conference win at Pasadena City College
on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons
(15-0-0, 8-0-0), who remained the
top-ranked Division III
(non-scholarship) college in the country
by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of American (NSCAA) return
home to host El Camino College at 4:00
p.m. on Friday. Cerritos has six regular
season games remaining before they take
the next step to their third state
championship in school history and first
since 2008...[more]
10.21.11 - Third straight shutout
turned in by Cerritos
As
they continue in their quest toward a
state and national championship, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
posted their third South Coast
Conference shutout in a row, and ninth
of the season, after a 6-0 win over
visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on
Friday. The Falcons, who remain ranked
#1 in the country, improved to 14-0-0
overall and 7-0-0 in conference action
with seven games remaining in the
regular season. They will travel to
Pasadena City College on Tuesday for a
3:00 p.m. conference game.
It was a slow start for Cerritos against
the Seahawks (2-8-0, 1-5-0), and it
wasn't until the 33rd minute that they
got on the board. Freshman
Karina Sandoval (Universidad de
Guadalajara) sent one of her special corner
kicks that found sophomore
Jennifer
Vega (Norwalk HS), who
headed the ball past LA Harbor goalkeeper
Natalia Zarro-Anaya for her fifth goal of the
season. Three minutes later, freshman
Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS)
scored her first of two goals on the day, as she
made a nice spin move after receiving a pass
from freshman
Gaby Zamarripa (Artesia HS),
and scored from 30-yards out on a left-footed
shot...[more]
10.18.11 - Falcons dominate East Los
Angeles
The Cerritos College
women's soccer team ended the first
round of South Coast Conference play
with a dominant performance against East
Los Angeles College and recorded a 6-0
win to improve their record to 13-0-0
overall and 7-0-0 in SCC play. The
Falcons, ranked #1 in the country by the
National Soccer Coaches Association of
American Division III
(non-scholarships), will close out their
four-game home stand when they host Los
Angeles Harbor College at 4:00 p.m. on
Friday.
It only took six minutes for Cerritos to
get on the board, as freshman
Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS) fed a ball through the defense to freshman
Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS) for her team-leading 13th goal of the season. The two had a hand in the second goal in the 17th minute when Nanez crossed a pass to Chacon, who quickly found freshman Lisette Lopez (Maywood Academy HS) for her first goal of the year. Right before halftime, freshman
Chelsea Villegas (Bishop Amat HS) saw that sophomore
Martha Rodriguez (Artesia HS) had beaten the defense, which sent her on a breakaway and goal in the 45th minute...[more]
10.14.11 - Cerritos registers 2-0
shutout win
Continuing their quest toward the state
and national title, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team dominated ECC
Compton Center in a South Coast
Conference game on Friday, as they
posted a 2-0 win. The score was
not indicative of how much the Falcons
dominated the game, as Compton only
crossed midfield offensively a handful
of times over the 90 minutes. The win
improved the team's record to 12-0-0 and
6-0-0 in the SCC and remain ranked #1 in
the country by the National Soccer
Coaches Association Division III
schools. Cerritos will now play their
third straight home game on Tuesday at
4:00 p.m. when they host East Los
Angeles College.
Although they only scored twice, they
had the ECC Compton
Center team leaving 10 players on defense to try
and keep the Falcons out of the net. As a
result, they did not record a single shot on
goal, with sophomore
Laura Ropp (Lakewood HS)
earning the win in the first 45 minutes, while
freshman
Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat HS)
played the second half...[more]
10.11.11 - Team remains top-ranked in
the country
Prior
to their South Coast Conference game
against Mt. San Antonio College, the
latest National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) Division
III (non-scholarship) ranking was
released. The Cerritos College women's
soccer team remained atop the ranking
and didn't allow that to affect their
play against the Mounties on Tuesday, as
they posted a 5-1 win. The Falcons
improved to 11-0-0 on the year and 5-0-0
in the SCC and will host their second of
four straight games on Friday at 4:00
p.m. when they face ECC Compton
Center.
Cerritos jumped on the Mounties (3-7-1,
1-4-0) from the outset, scoring in the
second minute as freshman
Gaby Zamarripa (Artesia HS)
sent a pass from the top of the box to sophomore
Monica Ramirez (Segerstrom
HS/Irvine Valley College), who scored her
third goal of the season and second in as many
games.
"We got ourselves in a good position by
scoring early," said head coach
Ruben Gonzalez. "We just came off
two tough games and wanted to be able to
maintain our intensity. Early in the game we
were able to do that, but had a few lapses. But,
everybody got a chance to play, so having that
experience was important."...[more]
10.07.11 - Cerritos shuts out another
opponent
Back in 2009, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
posted a school record 19 shutouts, but
failed to win their third straight state
championship. This season, the Falcons
may not set the shutout record, but they
are currently ranked #1 in the nation by
the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America (NSCAA) for Division II
schools. That ranking looks like it will
hold after Cerritos shut out rival Long
Beach City College, 4-0 on Friday in a
South Coast Conference match. The
shutout was the sixth on the year for
the Falcons, who improved to 10-0-0
overall and 4-0-0 in SCC play. The
10-0-0 start is their best in school
history, which also includes the 2008
season when they were 8-0-2 after 10
games, en route to a 22-0-4 season and a
state and national championship...[more]
10.04.11 - Falcons hold onto nation's
top ranking with win
With
every team looking to make a name for
themselves when facing the Cerritos
College women's soccer team, who is
ranked #1 in the nation by the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA),
another team has fallen by the wayside.
The Falcons posted a 3-0 South Coast
Conference win at El Camino College on
Tuesday to improve their record to 9-0-0
overall and 3-0-0 in SCC play. Cerritos
will now travel to Long Beach City
College on Friday at 4:00 p.m. for
another conference match.
After holding off El Camino (7-2-1,
2-1-0) for the first few minutes of the
game, which required a pair of strong
saves by freshman goalkeeper
Alexis Carrillo (Bishop Amat
HS), the Falcons came to life and
scored twice before halftime. In the
23rd minute, a takeaway after a failed
clearing attempt by Warriors goalkeeper
Bronwyn O'Neill was picked up by
freshman midfielder
Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS),
she led a pass to freshman defender
Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS),
who scored from the top of the 18-yard
box...[more]
10.04.11 - Cerritos women join the
fight against cancer
Just
as they did last season, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team will be
donning pink warm-up jerseys during
October to support Cancer Awareness
Month. Falcon head coach
Ruben Gonzalez has created an "I
CAN" page, his personal web page on the
American Cancer Society Cancer Action
Network, which is an advocacy tool to
help find the cure to fight cancer.
Gonzalez lost his mother, Silvia
Gonzalez, to the fight against
pancreatic cancer on March 16, 2006 and
he and his team are looking to raise
funds in her name.
"As a team, our goal is to raise $700,
but I really hope we can surpass that
number," said Gonzalez, whose team is
currently 8-0-0 overall and is ranked #1
in the nation by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
"I want to thank Adidas and Nikys-sports,
who donated the jerseys and are making
donations, for their generosity. We're
going to be wearing these pink warm-ups
as a reminder to all that the fight
against cancer is ongoing and we want to
do our part.".

09.30.1 - Goals come in bunches in
win
The
Cerritos College women's soccer team
needed 34 minutes to score their first
goal, but once they found the back of
the net, they did it in bunches. The
Falcons, who are ranked #1 in the
country by the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA), scored
four times in 14 minutes, as they posted
a 5-1 South Coast Conference win at home
against Pasadena City on Friday.
Cerritos will now travel to El Camino
College on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m.
conference match.
The first to score for the Falcons was
freshman Julissa
Castaneda (San Pedro HS),
who tipped in a pass from freshman
Victoria Carter (La Mirada HS)
that cleared the outstretched hands of Lancer
goalkeeper Jessica Capra. Cerritos then regained
possession of the ball right away after the
first goal, where freshman
Karina Sandoval (Universidad de
Guadalajara) fed sophomore
Monica
Ramirez (Segerstrom HS/Irvine
Valley College) for another goal in the
35th minute...[more]
09.27.11 - Latest poll has Falcons #1
in the country
For the second game in a
row, and fourth time this season, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
posted a shutout win. The Falcons, who
are now ranked #1 in the country in the
latest poll by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
for Division III schools, recorded a 2-0
win over Los Angeles Harbor College in
their South Coast Conference opener on
Tuesday. Cerritos (7-0-0, 1-0-0) will
now host Pasadena City College at 4:00
p.m. on Friday in another SCC game...[more]
09.23.11 - Cerritos does enough to
defeat Taft
In
what head coach
Ruben Gonzalez called a
"lack in a sense of urgency", the
Cerritos College women's soccer team was
able to put together enough offense to
record a 3-0 non-conference win at home
on Friday against Taft College. The
Falcons (6-0-0), who posted a 7-1 win
over Palomar College on Wednesday, will
now embark on the start of South Coast
Conference play. They will open on
Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. against a
much-improved Los Angeles Harbor College
team on the road.
The start of the game against the
Cougars (1-5-0) looked great for the
Falcons, as they found the back of the
net in the second minute. Freshman
midfielder
Lauren Nanez (La Mirada HS),
who scored three times against Palomar, picked
up her eighth goal of the season when she was
able to chip the ball past Taft goalkeeper
Leslie Aviles after a pass across the box by
sophomore midfielder
Susana Mendoza (Paloma Valley
HS)...[more]
09.21.11 - Falcons post 7-1 victory
over Palomar
One
of the strongest attributes of the
Cerritos College women's soccer team is
that, regardless of the score or how
much time is left on the clock, they
play as if it's the middle of the game.
It was never more evident than their 7-1
non-conference win at Palomar College on
Wednesday when the Falcons scored in the
final minute of the first half and the
game. With the win, Cerritos is now
5-0-0 on the season and their play did
not reflect the fact that they hadn't
played in 11 days. But the team will get
little chance to rest, as they drive up
to Taft College on Friday for a 4:00
p.m. non-conference game...[more]
09.10.11 - Win over Victor Valley
improves record to 4-0-0
With the ability to
score goals in bunches, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team took a 2-0
first half lead, which propelled them to
a 5-1 non-conference win on Saturday
morning at Victor Valley College. The
win improved the team's record to 4-0-0,
while the squad will travel to Palomar
College on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m.
non-conference game.
Early in the game, sophomore midfielder
Jennifer Vega (Norwalk HS) scored twice to give the team a quick 2-0 lead, as she found the back of the net in the 20th and 22nd minutes of the game. Sophomore midfielder
Monica Ramirez (Segerstron HS/Irvine Valley College) teamed with Vega on the first goal, while freshman forward
Mabel Chacon (Cabrillo HS) picked up the assist on the second goal...[more]
09.09.11 - Cerritos comes back in second
half
After watching the
men's team come back in the second half
to post a win in their game, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team
jumped out in the first four minutes of
the second half in their non-conference
game against Cosumnes River College and
scored twice. Their 1-0 deficit was now
a 2-1 lead that the Falcons (3-0-0)
would maintain for the remainder of the
game. The squad has little time to rest
on their laurels in their win over the
powerful Eagles, as Cerritos will play
an 11:00 a.m. non-conference game at
Victor Valley College on Saturday...[more]
08.30.11 - Falcons finish East Coast
trip with 4-0 win
Playing as though they
are in mid-season form, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team posted their
second shutout in as many games, as they
recorded a 4-0 non-conference win over
Monroe (NY) Community College on
Tuesday. The Falcons (2-0-0), who are
ranked #9 in the country by the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
in Division III (non-scholarship
division), defeated the Tribunes
(1-1-0), who opened the season ranked #6
in the country by the NSCAA in Division
I (scholarship division). Cerritos will
now get a few days rest after their East
Coast trip before the host their season
opener against Cosumnes River College at
3:00 p.m. on September 9...[more]
08.28.11 - Cerritos posts 2-0 shutout
win in opener
Due to the impact of
Hurricane Irene, the Cerritos College
women's soccer team was in need of a new
opponent, as Mercer (NJ) Community
College had to go back to New Jersey to
evacuate. Host school Monroe (NY)
Community College invited Tompkins
Cortland (NY) Community College to take
on the Falcons in their season-opener.
Cerritos, ranked #9 in the country by
the National Soccer Coaches Association
of America (NSCAA), posted a 2-0 win
over the Panthers. Cerritos (1-0-0) will
now face Monroe on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
in their final game of their East Coast
trip...[more]
03.15.11 - Women's soccer coach wins CIF
Championship
In his six seasons as
the Cerritos College women's soccer

Ruben Gonzalez has experienced
what it's like to win a South Coast
Conference championship, state
championship and national championship.
But one championship had eluded Gonzalez
in his four years as the girl's soccer

01.11.11 - Soccer team delivers smiles
to orphanage
It's become a yearly
tradition for Cerritos College women's
soccer coach
Ruben Gonzalez to bring several
members of his team to the Casa Hogar
Santa Teresita de Jesus Orphanage for
Girls in Tijuana. Gonzalez, his wife
Senaida, several Cerritos College and
Bishop Amat High School players arrived
on January 7 for Día de los Reyes (Three
Kings Day), which represents the arrival
in Bethlehem of Wise Men bearing gifts
for the baby Jesus. In addition to gifts
and monetary donations, they provided
the group of 60 girls with some Cerritos
College women's soccer sweatshirts,
soccer balls and spent the day with the
girls.
"We arrived at the orphanage with the
preparations underway for the young
girls," said Gonzalez. "This year we
learned the orphanage had grown from 50
to 60 children, including a 1-year old
boy. There were many new faces when we
arrived and the children were all
