The Cerritos College women's soccer
team missed out on their first opportunity to advance to
the state tournament, as they were defeated, 7-0 by
Santiago Canyon College on Saturday afternoon. The
Falcons (22-2-0), who were seeded #3, had to deal with
the loss of sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30,
Mexico
HS), who was dismissed from the team the day before for
disciplinary action. That put them at a disadvantage
against a gifted Eagles (23-1-1) team that was seeded #2
and had scored 124 goals on the season and had allowed
only six. The win also marks the first time they will
advance to the state championships, which will be held
at Fresno Pacific University next Friday and Sunday.
Santiago Canyon's Rachel Varela put
the game out of reach in the second half as she netted
two goals in the 78th and 80th minutes, her second
coming on a blast from the left side that found its way
inside the right post. Freshman Leslie Bryant rounded
out the scoring for the Hawks in the final minutes as
she was able to score on a free kick from 30 yards out.
The game was played in a heavy wind,
which forced the play to be kept on the ground, where
the Eagles used their speed to put them in position to
score. On the day, the Falcons had just four shots on
goal, while replacement goalkeeper
Diana Limon
(Long Beach
Millikan HS) made 10 saves. |
