After
completing their most successful season in school
history, the Cerritos College women's soccer team and
players have been honored with a variety of awards. The
Falcons swept through the South Coast Conference with a
12-0-0 record to capture their first title in school
history and concluded the season with a 22-2-0 record
after coming within one game of advancing to the state
final four. As a result of their success, the team was
ranked 15th in the country at the end of the season by
the National Soccer Coaches Association/adidas rankings.
On an
individual basis, freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS) became the first Falcon
player ever to be named to the 2nd Team NSCAA/adidas
Women's Junior College Division III All-America after
finishing the season with 11 goals and a school record
17 assists in 20 games. Additionally, Juarez was joined
by sophomore defender
Nancy
Gutierrez (A.B. Miller HS) on the
2006 NSCAA/adidas Junior College Division III Women's
All-West Region Team. The honors earned by the players
are the first-ever by Cerritos players. Gutierrez, who
played on the Mexican National Team Under-20 Women's
World Cup in Russia earlier this year, also
helped the
Mexican National Team reach the FIFA Under-20 Women’s
World Cup after they placed third in the World
Championships last year. She finished this season with
four goals and seven assists.
Juarez was also selected the SCC
Player of the Year, while head coach
Ruben
Gonzalez was named the conference's
Coach of the Year. Those who earned 1st Team All-SCC
honors included Juarez, Gutierrez, freshman forward
Monica
Cedillo(Long
Beach Millikan HS), sophomore midfielder
Jackie Flores
(Lynwood HS)
and sophomore defender
Rocio Sanchez
(Foshay Learning
Center HS). Cedillo led the team with 19
goals this season and added six assists, while Flores
had seven goals and 12 helpers. As for Sanchez, she
scored three goals and helped the team post 13 shutouts
on the season.

(Cantwell HS),
sophomore defender
Nykolett Leyva
(California HS),
freshman forward
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS)
and sophomore defender
Jessica Romero
(Castle Park HS).
Sanchez finished the year tied for second on the team
with 12 goals and chipped in with four assists, while
Leyva picked up two assists. Rivera, who missed the last
two games of the year with an injury, had 12 goals and
four assists, while Romero was also another integral
part of the defense while scoring twice and adding four
assists. |
