On the strength of their 5-2 South
Coast Conference win at Long Beach City College on
Tuesday afternoon, the Cerritos College women's soccer
team moved back up to #2 in the state, as they get ready
for the start of the Southern California Regional
Playoffs. The Falcons, who have already clinched their
first conference championship in school history,
benefited from a 2-1 Cypress College win over Santiago
Canyon College, which allowed them to move up from the
third spot. Cypress is the #1 team in the state, while
the loss by the Hawks drops them down to #3.
Cerritos (19-1-0 overall, 11-0-0 SCC)
will
close out the regular season at home on Friday at 1:00
p.m. against El Camino College. Should the Falcons
remain #2, they would open the playoffs hosting the
#15-seeded team.
In the win over the Vikings (13-5-3
overall, 7-3-1 SCC), freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS)
and freshman forward
Monica
Cedillo (Long
Beach Millikan HS) each scored twice to lead
the team. Juarez got the team on the board in the fourth
minute when she took advantage of a bad clearing pass
and scored from 25 yards out. It was just nine minutes
later when Juarez struck again, as Cedillo sent her a
pass and Juarez scored from 30 yards out.
The LBCC offense finally came alive
in the 28th minute when Allie Escobedo rocketed a shot
of her own from long distance. Midfielder Christina
LaMarca fed Escobedo with a pass form the center line,
which she blasted from 30 yards out past sophomore
goalie
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30, Mexico HS) to get the Vikings on the
board. Long Beach City would tie it up just three
minutes later, as forward Jessica Lopez hit Escobedo
with a cross-pass from the right corner. Escobedo’s
quick shot beat Sanchez again to make the score 2-2.
But before halftime, the Falcons
would take a lead they would not relinquish. Sophomore
defender
Jessica Romero
(Castle Park HS)
took the initial shot on goal, but after the ball
bounced back to Cedillo, she drilled it home for a goal
in the 34th minute. In the second half, Cedillo gave
Cerritos a 4-2 lead when she teamed up with Romero once
again in the 57th minute. After Romero sent a pass
toward the Viking goal, the ball went behind the
defenders and after LBCC goalkeeper Rita Brown, Cedillo
chipped the ball over her head for a goal. Cerritos
closed out the scoring in the 62nd minute when freshman
forward
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS)
sent a ball to sophomore forward
Laura Alvarez
(Cantwell HS),
who broke in on a breakaway and scored. |
