Freshman forward Monica Cedillo (Long Beach Millikan HS) scored in the 94th minute to provide the only scoring for the Cerritos College women's soccer team, as they posted a 1-0 overtime victory over Rio Hondo College in the 1st Round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs at home on Saturday. With the win, the Falcons (21-1-0), seeded #3 in the playoffs, will now host the winner of the Grossmont-Mt. San Antonio game on Tuesday at home at 2:00 p.m.

Cerritos played a sluggish game and, although they had several good scoring chances, were unable to put any of them away in regulation. By contrast, the Roadrunners (13-6-3), seeded #14, did their best to shut down the Falcons and took any offensive chances they could get.

In overtime, which consists of two 15-minute periods, the Falcons pushed their offense up the field right away, as they did during regulation. Faced with an eight-man defense, Cerritos pushed the ball into Roadrunner territory, where freshman midfielder Rebecca Juarez (Jurupa Valley HS) sent a hard crossing pass to Cedillo, who chipped the ball past Rio Hondo goalkeeper Amanda Garza for the game's only goal.

Throughout the game, Garza made several outstanding saves, as she finished the game with 18 stops. She was helped along by two shots hitting off the crossbar, one by freshman forward Karina Rivera (Garfield HS) in the 10th minute and another in the 81st minute. She also made a diving save in the 89th minute on a header from Cedillo off a corner kick. By contrast, Falcon goalkeeper Elizabeth Sanchez (Bachillerato #30, Mexico HS) made several big saves on the day, including a hard shot by Sandra Gonzalez, who was marked by sophomore defender Nancy Gutierrez (A.B. Miller HS) the entire way.

Cerritos suffered a big blow in the game, as Rivera, who is tied for second on the team with 12 goals, went down with an injury in the first overtime period and will be lost for the remainder of the season.
