For the first time in school history,
the Cerritos College women's soccer team has advanced to
the third round of the Southern California Regional
Playoffs after their 3-2 home win against Grossmont
College on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons, (22-1-0),
seeded #3 in the playoffs, won their 17th game in a row
with their victory and will now face #2-seeded Santiago Canyon,
who posted a 6-0 win over Moorpark College on Tuesday
afternoon. The game will be played on Saturday, December
2 at 2:00 p.m. The Hawks (22-1-1) are the #2-seeded team
in the playoffs and have scored 124 goals on the
season while allowing just six and won the Orange Empire
Championship.
The Falcons struck early in the game
against the Griffins, as sophomore halfback
Sandra Jacobo
(Long Beach
Millikan HS) headed in a goal off a corner
kick by freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS).
Each time Cerritos appeared to be putting the game out
of reach, the feisty Griffins, who only lost one game
all season coming into the contest, struck back. Just 10
minutes after the Falcons took their lead, forward
Brittny Neill scored on a shot into the lower left
corner of the box off a pass by forward Eliana Parada.
It looked as though sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30,
Mexico HS)
would make the stop, but the ball rolled under her
before she could get down to make the save.
Before the end of the first half, the
Falcons struck again, as sophomore forward
Laura Alvarez
(Cantwell HS)
sent a pass to freshman
Tatiana
Gutierrez (Northview
HS) at the top of the box. She turned a took
a shot at the next that looked innocent enough, but it
had enough on it to roll under Griffin goalkeeper
Jennifer Armer.
It was a 3-1 Cerritos lead late in
the second half, as Juarez turned and sent a hard high
shot at the net in the 78th minute. It appeared as
though Armer was going to make a leaping catch, but the
ball came out of her hands and rolled into the net. The
shot came after a pass by sophomore
Monique Hudson
(Long Beach
Millikan HS) that split two defenders. It
was a one-goal game again three minutes later, as
Grossmont scored on a corner kick that appeared to
deflect off any number of players before going into the
net.
Each team had several offensive
attacks in the final minute, with the Griffins getting
the best chance on a solo shot by Tennille Rust that was
saved by Sanchez. Cerritos weathered the attack and
cleared the ball out every time the ball got to within
striking distance. The Falcon defense was anchored by
sophomore
Nancy
Gutierrez (A.B.
Miller HS), while sophomore
Jessica Romero
(Castle Park HS)
was also instrumental in the win. |
