For the first time in the 12-year
history of the Cerritos College women's soccer program,
the Falcons defeated cross-town rival Long Beach City
College after their 2-1 South Coast Conference home win
on Friday afternoon. With the win, the eighth in a row
for the Falcons, they are now 13-1-0 overall and 5-0-0
in conference play, while the Vikings dropped to 8-4-3
overall and 2-2-1 in the conference. Cerritos will now
travel to El Camino College on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m.
contest.
Prior to today's historic win,
the closest the team had ever gotten to beating Long
Beach City was a 2-1 loss last year after scoring the
first goal of the game. In this contest, the Falcons
came out quickly and struck in the fourth minute of the
game, with freshman forward
Monica
Cedillo (Long
Beach Millikan HS) scoring after receiving a
pass from freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS).
The game was physical from the outset, but Cerritos
appeared ready for the aggressive play, as they were
able to get the ball out of dangerous spots, which
opened several scoring opportunities. All the while, the
Falcon defense, led by sophomore
Nancy
Gutierrez (A.B.
Miller HS), kept turning away the Vikings.
It was a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute
after Cedillo lifted a nice pass over the Long Beach
defense into the box to freshman forward
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS).
After receiving the pass, Rivera turned a flipped the
ball over Viking goalkeeper Sarah Phillips, who played a
solid game and made several key saves that kept LBCC in
the game. The Vikings made a game of it just four
minutes later when Hannah Escamilla scored from a tight
angle into the upper corner of the net past sophomore
goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30, Mexico HS).
Both teams had their chances in the
final 25 minutes of the game, but good defense by the
Vikings Maria Ozorio and Kelly Matosian helped keep them
within striking defense. The Vikings moved Ozorio up to
an offensive position late in the game, but they were
unable to penetrate the Cerritos defense. On the day,
Phillips made four stops while Sanchez had three. |
