The Cerritos College women's soccer
team maintained their #2 ranking in Southern California
after defeating Pasadena City College, 5-0 on Friday in
a game played at Cerritos. The Falcons have now won 11
in a row and are 16-1-0 overall and remain atop the
South Coast Conference with an 8-0-0 record for 24
points. Next up for the team will be a home game against
second place Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday at 3:00
p.m.
In the win over the Lancers (1-12-4
overall, 1-7-0 SCC), the Falcons received two goals by
freshman forward
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS)
and sophomore defender
Rocio Sanchez
(Foshay Learning
Center HS), while freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS)
scored the other goal.
Cerritos got on the board in the 34th
minute when sophomore defender
Nancy
Gutierrez (A.B.
Miller HS) dribbled the ball into the box on
a nice spin move and set a hard shot at the goal. After
the ball deflected off the Lancer goalkeeper, Rivera was
there to take two shots at the goal before her second
one went into the net. Although they only scored once in
the first half, the Falcons had 16 shots on goal to just
one for Pasadena City.
In the second half, Sanchez received
a nice pass from Juarez and scored in the 48th minute,
while it only took her four minutes to pick up her
second tally of the game, this time unassisted. Rivera
picked up her second goal of the game in the 75th minute
on a rebound off a shot by Juarez. Lancer goalkeeper
Casey Hodge made a fine one-handed save on the first
attempt, but the rebound landed in front of Rivera, who
scored. Juarez finished off the scoring with an
unassisted goal in the 82nd minute.
On the day, Cerritos recorded 27
shots on goal to just two by the Lancers, with Falcon
sophomore keeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30, Mexico HS) making two saves. As for
Hodge, she recorded 22 saves in taking the loss. |
