The Cerritos College women's soccer
team moved one step closer to capturing their first-ever
South Coast Conference championship after their 1-0 home
victory against Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday
afternoon. The win improved the Falcons to 9-0-0 in the
SCC and 17-1-0 overall, while the second place Mounties
fell to 7-2-0 in the SCC and 13-4-1 on the year. There
are now only three regular season games remaining, with
Cerritos hosting Los Angeles Harbor on Friday at 1:00
p.m.
It was a very physical game, with
both players hitting the ground on contested balls
through the contest. The tactic for Cerritos was to try
and send long balls in hopes of getting past the Mountie
defense. They tried it early and often and had three
great chances in the first half, with freshman
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS)
getting two chances and sophomore
Sandra Jacobo
(Long Beach
Millikan HS) missing a good chance.
But, in the 22nd minute, Jacobo sent
a pass along the right side to sophomore
Laura Alvarez
(Cantwell HS),
who dribbled the ball along the base line and got around
the Mt. SAC defense. She then shot the ball between the
post and the legs of Mt. SAC goalkeeper Serina Lucero.
The offense would be enough for the win, but the Falcons
continued to try and get past the defense for another
tally, but were called for offside 11 times on the day.
The Cerritos defense, led by
sophomores
Nancy
Gutierrez (A.B.
Miller HS),
Rocio Sanchez
(Foshay Learning
Center) and
Nykollet Leyva
(California HS)
all did a great job of shutting down the Mounties, while
midfielders Alvarez, Rivera, freshman
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS)
and sophomore
Jackie Flores
(Lynwood HS)
all kept the pressure on Mt. SAC. On the day, Cerritos
had 18 shots to eight for the Mounties, with sophomore
goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30,
Mexico HS)
recording eight saves and posted her 10th shutout of the
year. |
