The Cerritos College women's soccer
team didn't allow a long drive up the coast to distract
them, as they traveled to Cuesta College in San Luis
Obispo this past weekend for two non-conference games.
The Falcons, who played without two starting sophomores,
posted wins over Santa Rosa College (2-1) and the host
Cougars (6-1) to improve their record to 3-0-0 on the
year. The team will now head to Orange Coast College on
Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
Missing for the Falcons were
sophomore defender
Nancy
Gutierrez (A.B.
Miller HS) and sophomore midfielder
Jessica
Magallanes (Long
Beach Millikan HS), but that didn't slow the
team down very much, as they had too much firepower and
depth. In the win over Santa Rosa, Cerritos saw the Bear
Cubs take a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute. But that seemed
to spark the team, as they turned up the heat on offense
and were awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball was
called two minutes later. Freshman forward
Monica
Cedillo (Long
Beach Millikan HS) drilled the ball into the
net to tie the game at 1-1, but the pressure didn't stop
there. After bombarding the Santa Rosa defense and
goalkeeper, the Falcons got their winning goal in the
63rd minute. Freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS) crossed
a ball into the box, where freshman
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS)
trapped it, volleyed it and then drilled it into the net
on a solid individual play.
Offense was at a premium against
Cuesta, as the Falcons scored four times in the first 20
minute to put the game out of reach right away. Cerritos
got on the board in the ninth minute when Rivera sent a
pass to sophomore
Jessica Romero
(Castle Park HS),
who scored her first goal of the season. Just two
minutes later, sophomore
Ailema Damian
(El Monte HS)
send a pass to Romero, who scored once again on a hard
shot from 40 yards out that hit the Cougar goalkeeper's
fingertips and found its way into the net.
After stealing he ball right away
when play resumed, sophomore halfback Sandra
Jacobo (Long
Beach Millikan HS) took the ball down the
right sideline and crossed it to Rivera, who shook off
one defender and scored. In the 17th minute, Romero
received the ball from Damian at the top half of the box
and took a shot that went between the goalkeeper's legs
to give the Falcons a 4-0 advantage. The Cougars did
score before the end of the half, but in the 52nd
minute, the Falcons turned up the offense again after
sophomore midfielder
Jackie Flores
(Lynwood HS)
sent a pass to Jacobo, where she was faced with a
one-on-one situation with the keeper. Jacobo calmly sent
the shot to the right side past the goalkeeper and into
the net. Cerritos closed out the scoring on a clearing
pass from sophomore defender
Nykollet Leyva
(California HS)
that sailed over the Cougar defense and landed in front
of sophomore midfielder
Briana
Llerenas (Arroyo
HS), who took a shot from the left side and
into the net.
Over the weekend, sophomore
goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30 HS,
Mexico)
was solid and controlled the tempo when she made a save.
In the two games, she allowed just two goals and
recorded nine saves. |
