In one of their tougher games of the
season, the Cerritos College women's soccer team, ranked
16th in the country, traveled to Yuba College in
Marysville on Friday to face the 18th-rated team in the
country. After leading 1-0 at the half, the Falcons
allowed two early second-half goals and suffered their
first loss of the season, 2-1, which dropped their
record to 4-1-1 on the year. Cerritos will now go up
against another vastly improved team on Tuesday, when
they travel to take on 7-0 San Bernardino Valley
College.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the
29th minute on a goal by sophomore defender
Rocio Sanchez
(Foshay
Learning Center HS)
on a pass down the right side by sophomore defender
Jessica Romero
(Castle
Park HS).
Sanchez accepted the pass from the right corner and
fired off a shot that went into the net on the far post.
Cerritos dominated the first half, but just had a hard
time finishing their rushes and were turned away.
To start the second half, the 49'ers
sent the ball right at the net and it hit the crossbar
and was knocked away by sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez
(Bachillerato
#30, Mexico HS),
which set up a corner kick. As the players were getting
set, the referee hit Sanchez with a yellow card and
awarded Yuba a penalty kick after she was charged with
elbowing a Yuba player several times. Right after the
game-tying penalty kick, the 49'ers pushed the ball
downfield and took a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
However, before the end of the
game the Cerritos players thought they had tied the game
when a shot by freshman forward
Karina Rivera
(Garfield
HS)
hit the crossbar. The Falcon players claimed the ball
hit the inside of the crossbar then deflected off the
inside of the net and the ball came out. The referee
ruled that the ball did not go in and the team
was saddled with their first loss. |
