Facing one of the few remaining
undefeated teams in Southern California, the Cerritos
College women's soccer team wasted little time showing
San Bernardino Valley College that they are one of the
elite teams in the area, as the Falcons scored in the
first minute of the game and rode that momentum to a 6-0
non-conference win on Tuesday. For the Falcons, who are
rated 16th in the country, they improved their season
mark to 5-1-1, while the Wolverines dropped to 7-1-0.
There is a chance that Cerritos may have their tie
removed from their record and replaced with a victory,
as San Diego Mesa has filed paperwork stating that they
will need to forfeit their result, a 2-2 tie on
September 8. Next up for the Falcons is a home match at
4:00 p.m. against Antelope Valley College on Friday.
On the opening kickoff, sophomore
forward
Laura Alvarez
(Cantwell HS)
sent a volley to sophomore halfback
Sandra Jacobo
(Long Beach
Millikan HS), who scored to give the team an
immediate 1-0 lead. The Falcons didn't turn off the
pressure for one second, as they continued to pound the
Wolverine backline and in the 12th minute, they took a
2-0 lead on a goal by freshman midfielder
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS)
off a crossing pass by sophomore midfielder
Jackie Flores
(Lynwood HS).
It was a relentless attack the first
45 minutes and it wound up producing two more goals,
with Alvarez scoring into the far post after receiving a
pass from freshman
Karina Rivera
(Garfield HS),
while freshman
Monica
Cedillo (Long
Beach Millikan HS) scored the other goal in
the 37th minute off a pass from sophomore
Diana Limon
(Long Beach
Millikan HS).
Cerritos did add two more goals in
the second half, one by Flores in the 72nd minute, while
Juarez picked up her second tally in the 77th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez (Bachillerato
#30,
Mexico HS)
was asked to make four saves and earned her third
shutout of the season. On the offensive front, the
Falcons pounded the San Bernardino Valley side for 20
shots and controlled the tempo the entire match. |
