Knowing they would be playing
their South Coast Conference opener shorthanded, the
Cerritos College women's soccer team knew one of the
most important aspects of their game at East Los
Angeles College on Tuesday was to keep the pressure
away from their own goal. With sophomore goalkeeper
Elizabeth
Sanchez
(Bachillerato
#30, Mexico HS)
forced to miss the game due to a red card in the
previous game, and being the only true keeper on the
team, the Falcons turned to sophomore
Diana Limon
(Long
Beach Millikan HS)
to get in the net. Not only did she turn away the
three shots she faced, Limon recorded a shutout, as
Cerritos registered a 4-0 win over the Huskies. The
team also played without the services of freshman
Karina
Rivera
(Garfield
HS)
and sophomore
Ailema
Damian
(El
Monte HS),
who also received red cards in the win over Victor
Valley College on Monday. With the win, the Falcons
are now 9-1-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in SCC play.
They will now travel to Pasadena City College next
Tuesday for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
After a slow start to the game,
the Falcons struck in the 40th minute, as sophomore
defender
Nancy
Gutierrez
(A.B.
Miller HS)
sent a pass through to freshman
Monica
Cedillo
(Long
Beach Millikan HS),
who scored her first of two goals when her shot from
the top of the box drilled the back of the net.
Gutierrez got on the scoreboard in the 48th minute,
as she executed a penalty kick after sophomore
Rocio
Sanchez
(Foshay
Learning Center HS)
was taken down in the box.
Cerritos closed out the scoring
three minutes apart when Cedillo scored in the 64th
minute on a header after receiving a crossing pass
from the right side by freshman
Rebecca
Juarez
(Jurupa
Valley HS)
and then in the 67th minute, as Juarez scored on a
breakaway from a pass by Gutierrez. Limon, who is
normally a midfielder and has scored three goals on
the season, did a solid job in goal to help post the
win.
