The Cerritos College
women’s soccer team didn’t waste any time continuing the
success the team experienced last season. The Falcons,
who opened the season ranked 14th in the
country by NSCAA/adidas Division III National Rankings,
posted an 8-0 win at Golden West College on Tuesday.
With only one returning player from last season, the
team found instant offense from several freshmen, who
made an immediate impact.
The Falcons look to go 2-0 when they travel to Oxnard College
on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
It was 3-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game and
the Falcons scored all of their goals in the first half.
Freshman Desiree Cardenas (West Covina HS)
got the season started, as she scored on a one-timer off
a pass from freshman Samantha Ramirez (California
HS). Just one minute later Cardenas scored her
second goal, as freshman Maria Zubiate (La
Puente HS) sent a crossing pass that was placed
perfectly into the net. The offense didn’t stop there,
as Ramirez added a goal to her early assist scoring on a
shot from the top of the box in the eighth minute.
By the end of the first half, Cerritos scored all eight
of their goals, as Cardenas finished off her hat trick
with a goal on a header in the 18th minute,
teaming with Ramirez who sent a pass from the right
side. Freshman Corina Villegas (Perris HS)
added two goals, with her first coming on a big crossing
pass from sophomore Rebecca Juarez (Jurupa
Valley HS) in the 16th minute. Villegas
then closed out the scoring in the half and in the game
in the 43rd minute on an unassisted goal.
On the day,
Juarez finished with three assists, while freshmen
Monique Cisneros (Mayfair HS) and Susana
Mendoza each adding a goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Chantal Cervero (Cerritos HS) was not asked
to make any saves, while the Falcons recorded 24 shots
on goal. |
