Coming down to the final few games of the South Coast
Conference season, the Cerritos College women’s soccer
team seems to have broken out of their slump that
plagued them a few weeks back. The Falcons, ranked #1 in
Southern California, defeated El Camino College, 4-1 on
Friday afternoon. With the victory, Cerritos (17-2-3
overall, 7-1-2 SCC) has now won five straight games and
will host their last two conference games. They
currently lead the conference by three points over Mt.
San Antonio College and by four over third place Long
Beach City College. The team will host East Los Angeles
on Tuesday and then LBCC on Friday, with both games at
3:00 p.m.
In the win over
the Warriors, freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) continued her torrid
scoring streak, picking up two more goals and assisting
on the other two. In the last three games, she has
scored six goals (two in each game) and assisted on
three others. Villegas has now scored 25 goals on the
year and assisted on 14 others, while her goal total
continues to break her own freshman record and moves her
closer to the single-season record of 32 goals scored by
Kelly Walker in 1996.
Villegas scored
the first goal in the 39th minute when
freshman
Georgina Garcia (Norwalk HS) fed her a
pass between two defenders, which sent her in one a
breakaway. Just eight minutes later, freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (Mayfair HS) recorded her ninth
assist of the year when she cleared the ball at midfield
over the defenders to Villegas, who scored into an open
portion of the net.
Sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS) put the Falcons in position
for their third goal in the 53rd minute when
she sent in a short kick off a corner to Villegas. After
taking the ball into the box, Villegas found freshman
Brenda
Ramirez (Buena Park HS), who chipped the
ball in for a goal. Cerritos closed out their scoring in
the 56th minute on another corner kick, as
Villegas sent the ball toward the net, where freshman
Alyesse Orr
(St. Joseph HS) headed the ball in.
Freshman
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) picked up her 17th
win of the year, as she stopped four shots on the day.
As for Cerritos, they recorded 16 shots at the Warrior
goal. |
