Ranked #1 in the state and in Southern California, the
Cerritos College women’s soccer team recorded a dominant
5-0 South Coast Conference home win against East Los
Angeles College on Tuesday. The Falcons, who are 18-2-3
overall, share the lead in conference play with Mt. San
Antonio College with an 8-1-2 record for 26
points. The team closes out their regular season at home
against Long Beach City College, who handed Cerritos
their only conference loss. All the Falcons need to do
is record at least a tie against the Vikings, and they
will win their second straight outright conference
title. Cerritos has already clinched at least a share of
the title with the Mounties, who ended their regular
season with a 2-1 win over LBCC on Tuesday.
Freshman forward
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) took some of the
scoring thunder away from leading scorer
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) by scoring twice and
adding two assists in the win. Cisneros accounted for
the team’s first two goals early in the game, as the
Falcons established the tempo and played the game they
way they do the best – with quick passes that utilize
their team speed.
Just as they did
to start the game, Cerritos scored early in the second
half, as freshman
Susana
Mendoza (Paloma Valley HS) sent a pass
from the center of the field toward the top of the box.
Her pass landed in front of freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS), who controlled
the ball and then drilled a shot past Huskies goalkeeper
Adriana Gomez for a goal. Just five minutes later,
Cisneros attempted to put the ball in front of the East
LA net, but before it came down, Cardenas chipped the
ball and scored to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore
Rebecca Juarez (Jurupa Valley HS) closed
out the scoring in the 68th minute, she
turned and scored from the top of the box on a pass from
Cisneros.
The shutout by
Cerritos was also the ninth of the season for freshman
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS), who was asked to
make just two saves. It was also her fourth shutout in
the last six games. |
