The Cerritos College women’s soccer team secured their
second straight South Coast Conference championship on
Friday afternoon, as they handed Long Beach City College
a 3-1 defeat. The win pulled the team ahead of Mt. San
Antonio College, who finished their season with 26
points in conference play, while the win by Cerritos
(9-1-2) gave them 29 points. The Falcons(19-2-3
overall), who are ranked #1 in the state and Southern
California, based on their power rating, will find out
on Monday where they are seeded in the playoffs and who
they will play. If seeded in either of the top two
spots, the team will host all of their Southern
California Regional playoff games, as long as they
continue to win. The post season begins next Saturday
afternoon.
It was the
Vikings that handed the Falcons their lone SCC loss, but
the team played without returning All-American and SCC
Player of the Year
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS). Given a chance to face LBCC,
Juarez made the most of it, as she scored the first goal
and assisted on the team’s second goal. She opened the
scoring in the 33rd minute by taking a feed
from freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) and dribbled in front of
Viking goalkeeper Rachel Waters before scoring.
In the second
half, the two teamed up again to give Cerritos a 2-0
lead, as Villegas received a nice crossing pass from
Juarez and one-timed the ball into the net in the 58th
minute. The Falcons pushed their lead to 3-0 less than
10 minutes later, as freshman
Desiree
Cardenas (West Covina HS) drilled a laser
that went just under the crossbar and into the net. The
Vikings scored their lone goal in the 79th
minute when Melissa Steffens lofted a free kick over
Falcon goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS), who only saw three
shots all game.
The Falcon
defense did not allow the Vikings to cross midfield very
often on the day and controlled the tempo of the game
from start to finish. Although it was a physical game,
Cerritos had many scoring chances and had three of their
shots hit the crossbar. Villegas, along with freshmen
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) and
Vanessa
Monreal (Lynwood HS) all had shots hit
the crossbar, while freshman
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS) was robbed twice on
rebounds in front of the net. |
