Just as they did last season, the Cerritos College
women’s soccer team needed to go into overtime to escape
their first round opponent in the Southern California
Regional Playoffs. The Falcons scored on a penalty kick
in injury time of regulation and then added two more in
overtime to register a 3-1 win over Ventura College, in
a game played Saturday afternoon at Cerritos College.
The Falcons (20-2-3), seeded #2 in the playoffs, will
now face the winner of the Santa Barbara City
College-Moorpark College game in the second round at
Cerritos on Tuesday. The game will be part of a
double-header with the Falcon men’s team and the games
will be at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The Pirates
finally penetrated the Cerritos defense with time
running out in regulation, as Tammy Donovan scored on a
rebound in the 77th minute. For the greater
part of the contest, Ventura (12-6-4), seeded #15 in the
playoffs, kept eight players back on defense to try and
thwart the vaunted Falcon offense that relies on quick
passes and speed on the outside.
With time
running out, Cerritos did their best to send the ball
deep, in hopes of outrunning Ventura players in an
attempt to get a tying goal. The break came in injury
time, as freshman forward
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) challenged Pirate
goalkeeper Alyse Quiroz to the ball. The two got to the
ball almost simultaneously at about 10 yards out and
Quiroz tackled Cisneros, which not only resulted in a
penalty kick for the Falcons, but a red card for Quiroz.
Freshman
Corina Villegas (Perris HS) calmly
stepped up and scored on substitute goalkeeper Denise
Camarena to send the game into overtime.
In the playoffs,
overtime consists of two 15-minute sessions that are
played out in its entirety. Only if the game is still
tied after the 30 minutes of play do the teams move to
penalty kicks.
Early in the
first overtime, the Pirates suffered another major blow,
as Marisol Arevalo, who assisted on the lone Ventura
goal, received a red card, which meant the team would
have to finish the game one player short. It took some
time, but Cerritos was finally able to find some open
space on the field and put a lot of pressure on Camarena
and the Ventura defense. With time running out in the
first overtime period, sophomore
Rebecca Juarez
(Jurupa Valley HS) saw her corner kick chipped in
for the eventual game-winner by Villegas.
Time after time
in the extra period, the Falcons found themselves in
position to add onto their lead, as Villegas, along with
freshmen
Brenda Ramirez (Buena Park HS) and
Vanessa
Monreal (Lynwood HS) all were stopped on
shots in front of the net by either Camarena or a
Ventura field player. Cerritos got a little breathing
room midway through the second overtime period when
Monreal chipped in a goal on a corner kick from
Villegas.
Although she was
only asked to make two saves after the first half,
freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) finished the day
with five saves, while Camarena made six saves in the
overtime periods. |
