Last year, the
Cerritos College women’s soccer team went 12-0-0 to win
their first South Coast Conference championship in
school history. They opened the SCC season this year by
winning their first two games, but saw their 14-game
winning streak snapped at home on Friday when they
played to a 2-2 tie against Pasadena City. The Falcons
(11-1-2 overall) held a 2-0 second half lead, but saw
the Lancers (6-2-5 overall; 2-1-1 SCC) score twice to
tie the game. Cerritos will now host El Camino College
at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
Cerritos took their 2-0 lead on a
pair of free kicks. In the 35th minute,
freshman
Corina Villegas (Perris HS) drilled a
shot that went through the hands of Randi Richardson for
a 1-0 lead. In the second half, freshman
Alyesse Orr
(St. Joseph HS) sent a hard shot into the upper
corner over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper
Priscilla Castellon.
But it was the
replacement of Richardson in goal that allowed the
Lancers to play even with the Falcons. She assisted on
the goal by Elba Menjibar in the 58th minutes
and then tied the game on a header that just cleared the
near post in the 82nd minute off a corner
kick from Sheima Berenji.
But the game was
close to being a blowout if the Falcons would have been
able to convert their chances in the second half. Both
sophomore
Rebecca Juarez (Jurupa Valley HS) and
freshman
Beatriz Cornejo (Bellflower HS) each hit
the goalpost, with Cornejo’s coming in a fast break
after she stole the ball. Freshman Martha Covarrubias
missed an open net, while freshman Susana Mendoza
was unable to control the ball off the bounce or she
would have had an open net.
Pasadena City
didn’t put much pressure on freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS), aside from their
two goals, while Juarez continued to feed the ball to
her teammates on attempted breaks, but Cerritos was
called offside 11 times in the game. |
