Freshman midfielder
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) scored twice to lead
the Cerritos College women’s soccer team to a 3-1 South
Coast Conference home win against El Camino College on
Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons, ranked
#3 in the country, improved to 11-1-2 on the year and
2-0-1 in conference play, while the Warriors dropped to
10-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference. Cerritos
will now play on the road against East Los Angeles
College in a 6:00 p.m. game on Friday.
Villegas gave the team a 1-0 lead in
the 30th minute when she scored on a penalty
kick. The play was called when freshman
Georgina
Garcia (Norwalk HS) was pulled down in
the box by Jennifer Gonzales. Villegas then drilled a
shot past goalkeeper Lauren Humphrey. It was a 2-0 game
nine minutes later when Villegas dribbled the ball
through several El Camino defenders and then saw her
shot go through the hands of Humphrey. The play started
when freshman forward
Monique
Cisneros (Mayfair HS) fed the ball to
Villegas, who did the rest of the work.
Right before
halftime, the Falcons took a 3-0 lead after Villegas
sent in a corner kick to Garcia, whose shot was saved,
but Cisneros was there to put the rebound in the net for
a 3-0 advantage.
The Warriors did
spoil the shutout attempt by freshman goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) when Samira Yakubu
scored on a scramble in front of the net off an original
shot from Cynthia Lozano. The play started as a corner
kick, with Yakubu getting credit for the goal in the 81st
minute. On the day, the Falcons had 17 shots on goal,
while the Warriors finished with 11 shots. |
