For the first time
since their season-ending playoff loss to Santiago
Canyon College last season, the Cerritos College women’s
soccer team was shut out. On Tuesday, cross town rival
Long Beach City College posted a 1-0 South Coast
Conference win against the Falcons, which also snapped
their 16-game conference unbeaten streak. The setback
puts the team’s record at 12-2-2 on the year and 3-1-1
in conference play. The Falcons will look to rebound
from the loss on Friday when they travel to Mt. San
Antonio College for a 6:00 p.m. game. The contest marks
the start of the second half of conference play, with
Cerritos recording a 6-3 win against the Mounties in
their first meeting.
Playing without sophomore playmaker
Rebecca
Juarez (Jurupa Valley HS), who had to
miss the game due to her red card against East Los
Angeles College on Friday, the Falcons found it
difficult to get deep into Viking territory. Cerritos
was limited to just three shots in the first half and
finished with just eight on the day, with freshman
Corina
Villegas (Perris HS) recording half of
them.
LBCC (11-2-2
overall, 4-2-0 SCC) broke the scoreless tie in the 61st
minute, when Hannah Escamilla scored on a counter attack
that seemed to catch the Falcons off guard. On the play,
LBCC midfielder Mayra Carranza sent a long breakaway
pass from midfield down the right sideline. Escamilla
received the pass and on her second touch nailed a shot
to the top-right corner past the diving arms of freshman
goalkeeper
Chantal
Cervero (Cerritos HS) with what turned
out to be the game-winning goal.
Cervero
finished her 71 minutes of action with five saves, while
freshman
Rosario Mendoza (Dominguez HS) saw action
in her second straight game and made three stops in her
19 minutes. |
